I need a cheap laminate sheet to use as a backing sheet for some MDF. Basically, I'm going to be cutting a sheet of MDF into strips and then glueing the strips on to a backing sheet with the cut sides facing up. I'm wondering what material would be best to use and I'm currently considering a laminate might be ideal. Does anyone know of any laminate sheet that would be suitable. Ideally it should be no more than 1mm thickness and must be easy to router cut.

Laminate is in-expensive enough but may be a little thick, If you apply a sheet of laminate to one side of a sheet of MDF and then cut it up it will have a tendency to bow.

I don't know what your building so I don't know why you are considering laminate (moisture, strength, ????)

contact cement is the best way to adhere laminate to MDF, but if you intend to glue the face side of the laminate to anything else, it will become more of a problem. The only adhesive that I've found that will bond to laminate without roughing up the surface is F-26, that stuff will etch into the surface and get a good grip.

Formica,,,even discontinued patterns and colors...apply with contact cement and router all the edges.
