I would recommend a leopard gecko. They are hardy lizards, easy to care for, and ideal for a beginning reptile owner. They do not require any special lights since they are nocturnal (they do require an under-tank heater, but since reptiles are cold blooded, nearly all of them have that requirement). They also have good temperaments and usually won't bite.

1. What bothers me most is not having a wide selection of reptiles. The store I prefer is a small, locally-owned one because I don't like the way larger chain stores keep their reptiles. 2. The single most important thing in a specialty pet store is knowledgeable staff. Don't have some moron clerk who tells customers they can feed crickets to cornsnakes or try to convince them that feeding live is the best way to go. 3. Price is only mildly important. It is much more important that animals be healthy and equipment be reliable. 4. I'm not particularly brand loyal, but the equipment needs to be quality stuff. 5. Cornsnakes, kingsnakes, small pythons, small boas.

The equina lizards are easy for beginners. They do not require a lot of care their diet is one of green beans and such, water, and a light and heat rock. Take them out of their cage and play with them and they will be friendly. They can even be tought to ware a leash.

Frogs are amphibians and not reptiles.
A turtle or tortoise is probably the easiest to care for.
Small snakes like corn or king snakes are good beginner pets too.

You might want to start with a kingsnake (eastern and Florida kings are nice). They become very tame, eat well, and they get to be, at most, five feet long.
These kings will eat almost ANYTHING! They can be "trained" to eat slices of beef or fish (but be sure to put some bone meal on it because they need the calcium).
As kings are snake-eaters, don't put any other snakes in the cage with them....

I agree with abbyful in that leopard geckos are good. I have two and they are the first reptiles I've owned. I was always afraid of them but leopard geckos are very sweet and easy to maintain. They're cute too!

lizard... crested gecko because they look awesome and can be fed a diet of just regular human baby food, reptile vitiman powder, and water. unlike most lizards youll be getting crickets for every few days which gets to be a pain. www.thecrestedgecko.com

I'm not sure... I want a pet too... i think turtles are the best though because I've done some research on them and turtles are fairly easy to handle.
