Are there any geographically specific definitions as to what area constitutes an island and therefore excludes certain protruding rocky surfaces? I am not sure. Books vary in their numbers. Having sailed all Greek seas I would go along with what most seem to say that there are about 3000 "islands" and only 184 are inhabited by humans. Now I am convinced that some of them are also inhabited by gods. A better place to be, I cannot think of.

3000 to 3500 is a good estimate. I was actually looking myself for this figure a while ago, as my wife is Filipino and the Philippines consist of around 7000 islands so being Greek myself I would like to compare ;-)

1400 islands of Greece, of which 227 are inhabited. Only 78 islands have more than 100 inhabitants.

I've got that book too, only I've found my copy! It says there are over 3000 islands, & if you include rocky outcrops 9500. but only 140 of them are inhabited
