[Last night, I was in the middle of a conversation on MSN & the power went out! I went into "What the heck" mode. First thing I did was try to calm my daughter down, then ran down to the fuse box to see if the main breaker for the house tripped. Next step was driving over to the neighbor's (I live in the country, we don't have right next door neighbors) to see if their's was out. Unfortunately, we ended up being out of power for like 8 hours.]

Eight hours of outage, wow! We've never had anything like that in the last 10 years. Our first reaction is to just relax and wait a few minutes to see if the power will come back on. If the lights don't come on quickly, I get our long-life LED lanterns and turn them on.

We're in the country with no near neighbors, but we can see distant yard-lights at night as well as the night glow of a couple small towns. We look for those next, if our lights stay off. So far, the other yard lights have always been off also, but not always the town lights. If the other yard lights were on, I'd check our breakers next.

After a couple hours of outage, I call the power company to see what's going on - I think that has happened twice in ten years. They always sound very harassed, no surprise, and tell me what the problem is & that they are working on it.

The worst thing ever. Last month our lights went out it was like 2 a.m and I was on my laptop doing my assignments and laying in my bed in my room with the TV on and lights on then poof it was pitch black and so quiet. My siblings were sleeping and my dad was still awake downstairs. I started hearing all sorts of noises, I was just been paranoid to make it worse my battery on my laptop died. The only light I had and my stuff wasnt saved. I was so terrified and oh yeah I am so afraid of the dark . If you are afraid of the dark you definitely know the feeling, I started crying too Sad but true, we didn't even have any candles! So I packed up my stuff went downstairs and I told my dad I was leaving to go to my moms to do my assignments that were due to tomorrow, but they weren't, I lied. My mom stays like 30 minutes away. I didn't want him thinking I was leaving because I was scared of the dark. I left that house so fast it made no sense. LMAO. I live in a country area too and when I was driving it was so dark all the houses had no lights. I couldn't even seen, not to mention I was the only car on the road. The worst night ever! When the lights go out, that means I'm out! Especially at night!

Count to 30 and wait for the backup power to come on. Turn off all nonessential stuff. Go next door [ 1/4 mile] and see if theirs is out also [ they don't have a cell phone] Call the power co. to see how long this time. I live far out and it can take a while for them to send a restoration team.

I live in the city, so I look to see if the entire street is out. Then, I light some candles and call the power company.

Good to see ya back in the space age world! =)
I usually go "wow how freaky"...then get the candles and portable radio and the weather radio..then head out to the barn for the kerosene lanterns if I have time to before the storms hit..=)
(we are in the country too,but usually only loose the power if its bad azz weather, which can be ice too)

Depends on the situation, actually. If I'm in the middle of something, I'll cuss; if I'm in bed, I won't be in a hurry to get out; if I'm at work, who cares?

First reaction is, "Did I just die?" Then when I figure out that I didn't, I go outside to see if the whole town is out.

Usually I'm like "awesome!" and then I go get the flashlights.
