I am looking to purchase an LCD Monitor, some say 2ms,4ms and 5ms response time. What does that mean? Which one should I be buying?

The response time is the average of the time taken to switch from full black to full white and the time taken to switch from full white to full black.

There are two thinks to know here.

1) The time taken to go from a gray to a different shade of gray is actually longer than the time taken for black to white. This is because in the panel the liquid crystal moves in response to an electrical field. A black to white change has a big change in the electrical field and pushes hard on the liquid crystal so it moves quickly. A gray to gray change has a small change in the electrical field and pushes softly on the liquid crystal so it moves slowly.

Since most changes (especially gaming) are gray to gray the specified switching time is not so useful. It does give a relative indication of which panel is better.

The optimum refresh rate for an LCD panel is 60 Hz. So a complete set of information is sent to the LCD every 1/60 seconds, or 16.7 mS. Any response time faster than that is of questionable value.

Well, faster LCD pixel response time is supposed to make scrolling, video, and games move more smoothly. But apparently the companies do not even understand the response time themselves and have made mistakes on their specs. Just trust your eyes and look at the quality for yourself... but if you're unsure, maybe just got for the highest you can find, e.g. 5ms.

"A faster response time is better-it indicates how quickly the screen can refresh a video image. If an LCD's response time is too slow, the display's pixels won't be able to keep up with the information sent from the computer's graphics card, and you'll see ghosting and digital noise as a result. But just because a vendor advertises a fast response time doesn't mean that its LCD will handle moving images better."

Good luck! :)

Depends on what you'll be doing on it. If you're a gamer (hi-end gaming) you'll want something that has a fast response time. If you're just surfing and checking email, I wouldn't worry too much about the response time.

The faster the response time, the less "ghosting" you'll notice. I.e. how quickly your monitor will refresh to new images. A slow response time can be very annoying when you're playing games.

You are referring to quickness to change from grey color to white then back to grey. If you are a gamer get the one w/ 2ms response. Otherwise, 5ms is OK.

do you game? i don't mean Wow or the Sims, i mean action games.
No? then the monitor refresh rates mean nothing.
what fast refresh rates give you is less blurring in fast action.
mine is 4ms and I see no pixelation or blurring.
