I'm having problems with my 2001 Mazda Tribute... it's recently started ideling rough, and going down the highway - usually between 40 and 55 mph. it starts jerking back and forth.. if I let off the gas it stops, or if I stomp on the gas it stops.. Another problem I've had since owning it ( I bought it used ) is around 45 mph. if I'm lugging it ( automatic transmission ) it will make a grinding kind of rattling sound under the car somewhere? If I'm able to speed past 45 mph. it doesn't do it at all.. I have no idea what either of these problems are - could the two problems be connected? What could it be?? Other than these two problems the car seems to run perfectly fine. It's really got me stumped.. I have No idea what it could be ?! Please help!!

Sounds to me like an ignition missfire on one of the spark plugs.

Check all the spark plug wires to make sure they're firmly pushed onto the spark plugs. (easy)

Change your spark plugs (kind of difficult)

Do a complete tuneup. (pay someone)
Fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs, rotor, distributor cap, PCV valve, and computer diagnostic.
It may cost you a couple hundred dollars, but it's worth it.
