In the state of Pennsylvania, you do not need a law degree. However, you are required to attend a "Minor Judiciary" school run by the Administrative Office of Pennsylvania Courts before you can be qualified to serve. Many candidates for office attend the school and become certified before they enter primary elections.

In the State of California, unfortunately, the people unwisely approved a proposition that required the judge candidates to be experience lawyers. This is bad as that Lawyers are often anti-constitutional, and that makes for an anti-constitutional judges.
