I am getting ready to plant grass in a section of my backyard that is 15' x 75', irregularly shaped. I am trying to see which is more cost effective out of sod or seed, so i need help deciding how much seed i would need. I plan to seed very heavily because the area has never been grassy- rock landscaping- and i think it may be harder to grow grass there. any advice?

I did the same job a few weeks ago. I used seed and after 1 month Its almost ready to cut. Much cheaper than turf.

Firstly remove the existing grass which is hard work. Pick and shovel job. Then beat the soil with a shovel and rake out the grass. Level the top soil with a rake.

The next step is to buy your seed. I suggest wilkinsons hardare and Diy chain. I bought mine there and it cost about £20 which was the only cost. Turf probably would have cost £300-400.

Spread the seed evenly and rake lightly. I watered the garden every day and its now growing nicely.

Hope this helps.

Kill weeds. it quite is no longer that common the two. you need to spray greater desirable than as quickly as. in spite of if that's transforming into season the place you reside... first use a huge spectrum weed killer like roundup. Wait a week.... each and every thing could be lifeless.... yet some seeds could have sprouted. if it is so... spray back. then you definately wait yet another week (for the roundup to breakdown).... unfold grass seed with a seeder so that's uniform.... and then the two rake it gently and unfold a "starter fertilizer" in the different case cover it with a skinny layer of seeding soil. some human beings cover it with straw to maintain it from drying (i stumble on this plant life greater weeds). you could then shop the seed from drying out. If it dries after it sprouts that's lifeless.... so water frequently (and the seeding soil can help shop it moist). If all is going nicely you could have a thick backyard desirable away. confirm to purchase grass seed at an area greenhouse..... they could have seed blends suited on your section... as adversarial to basic blue grass blends which you come across at abode Depot. this might assist you to spend much less on water.

You have 1125 square feet of ground to cover. Check the coverage rate on the brand seed (and size container) and figure it that way. Add a few pounds for heavy seeding. I am sure seeding will be cheaper than sod.
