Everytime some one retires, gets fired or gets promoted, this person is not replaced. This person's duties are just divided up among the remaining employees. The remaining employees do not get compensated for doing that extra work of the person that is gone. The remaining employees did not agree to do the extra work of someone that leaves, when they were hired. This is not the way to motivate employees. Why do companies think this is fair?

Dog lover, layoffs or culling the workforce as you call it yields the same results. Sorry I am not feeling the love.

Steven F, people are not paid a cost to serve customer, they are paid a wage to perform specific duties or functions. The outcome or output is how the customer is served. There is a reason that the FLSA was created in 1937.

iT'S not fair OR ethical !!! But as long as some people are willing to be "put upon" and used like this, business will continue to do it as all they care about is the BOTTOM-LINE ( aka PROFIT) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Legally you dont have to do anything that is not in your JOB DESCRIPTION and if you can prove that it's "not your job", you'll be able to stand your ground !!! Because if you can prove it and refuse totake on work you cant handle or you are over burdened and respectfully decline the work & you are fired -- you can then SUE them for REALLY BIG BUCKS !!! Enough for you to stay home the rest of your life if you choose to !!! Because if you're fired for declining to do work you are not qualified to do or work that over burdens you and it's not in your contract -- TAKE THEM TO COURT !!! Dont be used and manipulated by these big companies !!!! Many, many people sue and win !!!!!! The LAW is on YOUR SIDE !!!!

If the remaining employees CAN pick up the work done by the departing worker, there were too many employees before they left. The purpose of the company is NOT to provide you with a job. It is to provide CUSTOMERS with a product or service. What employees are paid is a cost of serving the customers. If you don't like the terms of employment, find an employer offering better terms. As long as you supply labor for what you are being paid, why would anyone offer more for the same labor?

I don't care I call that being cheap, and your right employee motivation and initiative starts to decline because people start to realize that maybe I shouldn't go the extra yard if my employee isn't going to do the same for me. To me unethical but hey we work for the people who change the rules every day.

I think they call it prosperity and to make the remaining employees work harder than ever to keep their company earning more and more for their shareholders. What I can't understand is that the employees left to fill the gap are so afraid to quit and find something better out there. That is what GWB and his adm has done to America!

Its called business. The idea of reducing cost through attrition is better than the alternatives..... laying off workers.

So, you should be thankful they are taking this approach and not just culling the work force.

If you're an at-will employee, then the company can have you do whatever work you'll agree to do. If you don't want to do it, you're free to leave.

They may not think its fair, but they certainly think its cost-effective.

they don't and it's not ethical...they do it because it makes them more money, that's all they care about.
