GPS is the measurement of your location anywhere in the world... It works by having 3 satellites exchanging information with your gps machine... first, a satellite sends out a beam of ray and the EXACT time it did so. When the machine in your car receives the beam, it records the exact time it does so. As there is a difference btw the time sent and received, the machine calculates it and divides it by the speed of the beam travels per unit time. the resultant is the distance from the car to the satellite. but as this may be on many points of the globe, it has two more satellites to calculate the distance from THEM. after it gets all three sets of info, it compiles them to just one point of the globe.

A GPS, gives info about your location on the Earth. GIS is Geographic Information Systems and it is used to analyze relationships in an area. This system uses thematic layers, or maps that have on type of info on them. For example, if a person wanted to know about the relationship between crime and property rates, they would overlay the map for property rates over the map of crime, which would give them a combines map. GIS ids mainly associated with computer and software.

Since the basic info has been taken, I thought I'd mention some hard and soft ware.

GPS receivers increase in price with their spatial accuracy. Commercially available differential GPS receivers can cost several thousand dollars, but be accurate to a few feet... this can be refined somewhat.

One of the main GIS software companies in the US is ESRI. They produce ArcGIS. It's pretty good. I know how to use it, since they give free software to my university in return for all of us being trained on it (or something).
My favorite for analysis (so far) is IDRISI. It was designed to be operated in 3rd world countries and requires not a lot of storage space or operating power. It also contains means of analyses not available in Arc. IDRISI Andes is the current version, and a student copy (good for a year) is available for about $40.
Software is generally a few hundred dollars.

An internet search should provide you with various types of software- depending on the use to which you want to put them.
GPS receivers come in a variety of types and degrees of accuracy- pick the best one you can afford for the project types you have in mind. ...Some projects may not require pinpoint accuracy.
