"School bus yellow is a color which was especially formulated for use on United States school buses in 1939. The color is now officially known in the U.S. as National School Bus Glossy Yellow and was originally called National School Bus Chrome. In April of that year, Dr. Frank W. Cyr, a professor at Teachers College, Columbia University in New York organized a conference that established national school-bus construction standards, including the standard color of yellow for the school bus. It became known officially as "National School Bus Chrome." The color was selected because black lettering on that hue was easiest to see in the semi-darkness of early morning."

"The color was adopted by the National Bureau of Standards (Now the National Institute of Standards and Technology) as Federal Standard No. 595a, Color 13432."

Like Fire Engine Red (not the brand name), it is a regulated color. Which means NOTHING on the road can use this color but a School Related Bus Service

people wanted a uniform color so school buses would be recognized by the same color nationwide. Plus, for safety sake, yellow was easier to see in fog, rain, and other bad weather conditions.

The yellow makes for easy identification, normally people won't hit the bus, (yellow = Caution), but lately I really think a lot of color blinded folks are driving.

Just for safety...they are a bright color so as to be easily seen in traffic, avoid accidents. You will see many with strobe lights on top for the same reason.

It's so other people know that there are lots of children on board. I guess its so that other drivers can be aware of the potential for accident and widespread child-death.
