If it could be said that the country is about evenly divided between Republicans and Democrats, then it might be safe to suggest that many Republicans don't necessarily buy into conservative, fundamental ideals.

The divorce rate is currently at it's lowest since 1970, primarily because more couples now choose to live together without marrying.
Divorce rates are indeed falling substantively among college-educated couples (oh, those naughty libs!)

The U. of Maryland found that of breakups within 10 years of marriage dropped by one-third among college-educated women!

College educated people "are learning how to negotiate marriages based on less rigid gender roles than in the past." (oooh, code word - gender roles!).

I'm not promoting "shacking-up;" just suggesting that it's certainly NOT just a "lib" choice.

And, any relationship (married or otherwise) still takes work and committment to succeed.

As regards the divorce rate for those choosing marriage, might one of the many contributing factors be too much immediate focus on material things (nice house, two nice cars, toys) which obviously require putting in a lot of hours in a career, which robs time away from the family?

College education may indeed contribute to learning compromise, but plenty of marriages have tanked because of stress over material things and plenty of marriages have survived that don't earn big salaries.

I think the decline in the divorce rate is due, in large part, to the fact that over half of those getting married today have parents who are, or were, divorced. Many are getting married later. Many are "shacking up" for a period of time, sometimes years, before marriage. Most do not want to put their children through a divorce, having experienced it firsthand themselves.

My wife and I have been together for 21 years - dating for 3, "shacking up" for 8, married for 10. She is from a "broken home" and didn't want to "rush into" marriage like her parents did - married at 19. We both got our degrees and aquired our "stuff" before we got married so now we can focus on our life together, not our life apart (work, school, etc.)

I, personally, think that people getting married later, after shacking up or not, is a major factor in the declining divorce rate. More maturity and a stronger "sense of self" is always a good thing...

Ideals? Whose? The first problem when we talk politics and divorce, they have nothing in common and divorce has nothing to do with politics other than it gets used as some kind of moral talking point. Divorce does not make people less patriotic, less godly or have a lower moral standard then anybody else, and college can't teach people how to stay together. My parents were divorced when I was thirteen, I didn't like it then but as an adult I realize it was best for everyone. That was in a time when catholics didn't get divorced. I grew-up as the only kid in the neighborhood with divorced parents. I waited until I was thirty seven to get married, within three years my wife divoced me and yet her parents stayed together until her father died. She has since re-married and divorced again, her third. I have never re-married. I think the kids of the boomers are learning from our mistakes and taking marriage more seriously, like it is intended to be, a life-long committment. Thick and thin, better and worse. They are smarter and all the moral crap we throw around to keep them in line, they see it for what it is, someone else passing judgement on them and they don't care. Thank god.

Shacking up is great for a little tail. But society is moving towards socialism and state care of children. This is just making matters worse.

Yes both sides are fed the same tripe so their excrement smells the same. One side simply accepts it the other thinks it is a terrible trend.

Comfortable lives, free sexual attitudes, increasing focus on destructive lifestyles by all media and the everything is good it's just different propaganda that pervades our modern culture all add up to fewer marriages and more divorce.

Partners are like shoes you spend a lot of money on a cool pair and next year you throw them out and get new ones.

If you refuse to look at the cause and only focus on the symptoms your patient will die.

I divorced my wife because she could not put family first and she started using drugs. Politics and education had nothing to do with it. A relationship requires commitment from both sides and any more I see so many females that think its all about them. WRONG! It's all about my children. They come first.
