It is aligned by doing a front end alignment. It isn't really a diy project because the tie rod ends have to be adjusted to bring the steering wheel back to the straight position & the toe in would be difficult to set without an alignment machine.

Well, if by aligning you mean so it's straight and true when the car is? Well, it's usually a function of your front end alignment. If it's off, your steering wheel will be off-center. You can't just move the steering wheel to a different position, that doesn't fix the real problem. You need to adjust the front steering linkage. IF you had the proper equipment and tools, you could do it yourself. Do you? If not, let someone qualified do it.

You can adjust the tie rods by turning in on one and out on the other the same amount. However 1/8 inch of toe is like dragging the front tire side ways 11 feet each mile. I reccomend take it in for alignment that way you will be told if there is something loose or bent. Also good four wheel alignments are not expensive compaired to $200 each tires.

It is normally a DIY job as long as you have a puller to remove the steering wheel & a little mechanical common sense. How you go about it depends on what make & model your car is.

If your steering wheel is out of line then you have some seriously worn out parts in the front suspention, you need to take it to your mechanic and have it fixed correctly.
