You do not need a portfolio or professional pictures to get an agency - they can see if you are what they want however youre styled or however unprofessional your pics are.

Either you go directly to an agency (remember to look it up and see if its serious or not first!), or you take clear pictures of yourself (according to agencies instructions; never nude, obviously!) and send them in to many different agencies to see if you are what they want. It's usually easier to become a "commercial model" than a reg. one, you don't need the same measurements etc. :)

And don't let one rejection bring you down!

Good luck!

EDIT: If you want to be a reg model (got this impression from som prev repliers), it's NOT like they said your weight that matters, its your measurements + that you have some certain features. "All" models have an "own look", obviously, but they often have well-defined/high cheek bones and a quite symmetrical face.

Ideal measurements (in cm, im european) are TOP around 87-60-89 - I was told I was a bit too chubby when my hip (***) was 89, I'm usually at 85-58-87. You should be at the very least around 170 cm, though all agencies "say" 173 at least, but if youre very special (or young, so they expect you to grow taller) they can make exceptions. Most models are 175 cm+ in length. In europe they range up to ~185, in asia the ones closer to 185 arent as liked as the slightly shorter ones (top around ~181). Don't know as much about US market, but guess it's closer to the european.

Ok, let's start with sitting down with a phonebook and looking up agencies in your area. Then take a parent and go around to see them in person. Do be careful. Some phony agencies promise to sign you on for a fee, cleverly disguised as charging you for 'head shots', test shots, puttting your info on their database/internet site. Do not EVER get changed in a photographer's studio unless there are other people there (hidden cameras mounted in your changing space could get naked pics of you splashed over the internet once you sign a release form - you are then powerless).

ALWAYS take a parent with you.

A reputable agency will have open calls where you can come in with no portfolio. Come in with a natural face, try to bring some flattering snaps you already have. Keep in mind, you need to be a minumum of 5 foot 9 (ideally 5/10) to be on the catwalk, no more than 55kg weight (I'm being generous here). A good indication, do people tell you you should be a model? Friends, family etc. Be CAREFUL if anyone on the street gives you their card. Could be a scam. Always always seek family advice or that of a trusted adult. Can't tell you how many horror stories I have heard.

A reputable agency (if they like you) will arrange to have your first test shots for free. If they don't, they are not a real agency. They will deduct items like that (and possibly hairdresser etc) from jobs they get you. DO NOT PAY ANY MONEY UP FRONT.

And yes, I was a professional model. It's a tough business, you must have thick skin. People rarely know your name, long hours, little food, constant scrutiny about your appearance. Be prepared to do some really crappy jobs to start with, hopefully you will get to travel after a few jobs.

Sorry to be an alarmist, but there are a lot of bad people out there looking to take advantage of young girls.

I say again, min 5ft 9, about 55kg (max usually, sorry I don't make the rules), do people tell you you should be a model.

Hope this helps.
