Are sitcoms simply mindless entertainment? Do they explore scenarios similar to what their audiences' would experience? Do any make social or political comments? Do they have any messages? Or are they a simple form of entertainment to distract us from our lives?

I do think sitcoms mimic some situations that we experience in the real world and they are entertaining to a lot of people but I do feel that producers/directors/writers use sitcoms as an outlet for their own social or political agenda simply by including them in the storyline in a way that 'favors kindly' their cause.

When I was younger, I found a bit of solace in watching sitcoms. As I've grown older, (I'm 26) I can't help but view them as a waste of time. TV in general kills conversation and can distract one from the things that are much more meaningful in life.

Depends on the situation Comedy. All in the Family and MASH were groundbreaking social commentaries in the guise of humor. I Dream of Jeannie was escapism at it's finest. You can't lump the entire genre into one category any more than you can lump all humans into one label. I would suggest you go back and look at the genre more critically and reform your question once you have given yourself the opportunity to define your topic.

sitcoms are important for the vacant masses to understand societys moral lessons, conviviality and congeniality. As painful as they maybe to normal folk, they do however give the masses direction and purpose in life as well as providing conversational matter in those awkward quite moments. added to this they allow psychotic and schizoprenic people an avenue in which to hallucinate that they have "friends".
