I see fat people in the service all the time. People with bad eyes, people that are extremely stupid. I'm in perfect health, and am now a successful, well adapted professional. But a few years ago (it is still the same) when I considered joining the armed forces I realized I could never join because I take Adderall. Why?

I should consider the possible side effects of Adderall? I work on million dollar machines for one of the largest banks in the world...Possible side effects?

Do you know what the side effects are of giving a below average intelligence person a rifle are? Or how about being overweight or loosing your glasses in the desert?

Adderal is a psycho-active drug used to treat a chronic mental disorder. The US military has standing policies not to allow anyone to join who uses/used (legally or illegally) any psycho-active drug or who has a chronic mental disorder.

I really don't think you're being serious. If you are, then you should be ashamed of insulting all of those people who are doing something with their lives.

People can be denied service entry for a number of reasons. Certain medications may effect your activity, or have a possibility of side effects that could cause dangerous accidents when dealing with the equipment and machinery that you would likely need to use in the military. I am an ex-RN but I haven't had much experience with ADHD patients and drugs. Consult your doctor about the side effects of the medicine or look them up on any medical site, you might be surprised at some of the possible side effects.

Now I really think you're lying about this. None of the things you mentioned would make any difference in their performance in the military. There are several intelligence exams you must take before being accepted into any branch. You are also placed relatively accordingly depending on what your score was. You also take physical health exams, if you are too out of shape to perform to their standards then you are not accepted. You also have to pass an eye exam. They will not accept anyone who's eyesight is below a certain level without their glasses just in case something like that should happen.

The military is funny about drugs. They'll let a few things pass, but the general idea is that they don't like people needing regular maintenance drugs, since there's always the likelihood that you'll be placed in a remote area where the logistics of supplying the drug would be a problem, or even impossible.

because the military doesn't want to take the risk that at some point you will be unable to procure your meds and thus put yourself and your fellows in danger.

You must be off the meds and function normally for a year before you can even consider it, but long tern usage(more than a few years) will most likely still DQ you anyway.

It is NOT a right to serve. it is however, a Priviledge, and not everyone gets to do so. The military has standards for a reason.

From volunteering at a rehab center, I can tell you, Genius IQ does not mean capable. I'm not saying you personally, but there are people who can pass those tests with more than flying colors and still not be able to function. They probably didn't take you for the same reason I passed my nuke test with flying colors and yet they denied me the program for HIGH SCHOOL GRADES! Only because they were not AB continuously. So I can tell you, I'm not sure what they think sometimes. It seems irrational to me too.

Well, IQ is about intelligence.... and ADHD is about a brain disorder that causes behavioral problems... so comparing the two is like comparing apples with oranges.

It doesn't mean they think you're dumb... it means they know that no matter how intelligent you may be, your brain is built in such a way that your behavior will be affected if you're not on your meds.

They need people with intelligence and self control. People on pscyh meds don't meet both criteria.

good question....this is really just a guess but maybe it's because they don't want to have to worry about getting you the pills, or you having to take them in the middle of a deployment...

The military doesn't want or need a cocky know-it-all with mental problems.
