If you look at a map of Los Angeles, you'll see that LAX is in "El Segundo", in the south-western area of LA, and pretty much near nothing interesting. Venice Beach and Santa Monica are sort of close by, but with the traffic he probably won't get to spend much time there. Same thing with Beverly Hills, or other places on the west-side.
I don't know what kind of person your hubby is, but Venice Beach is more of a hippie-ish place with a lot of freaks, and Santa Monica is more upscale. They've got a nice Pier, and Promenade there. Beverly Hills is the most upscale, and he could go to Rodeo Drive, or the Beverly Center if he likes to shop at expensive stores.
I guess if he has 5 hours then it might be enough, to spend a couple hours somewhere, a lot of it depends on what time it is, if it's rush hour, then it could take like an hour or more to go to one of those places.

There isn't really much around LAX. By the time you got to anything interesting, you would have to go back to make your flight. Remember that once you leave the "secure" area at the airport, you must visit those nice people from TSA again to reenter. To the west is the Pacific Ocean. To the south is El Segundo, not much there. To the east is the Lennox / Inglewood area, not really somewhere to be roaming around in. The only possibility would be Marina Del Rey, and Santa Monica to the north. There may be other contributors that can offer suggestions about that part of town, but downtown Los Angeles, and most of the "touristy" places would take too to get to.

There is nothing close by LAX but hotels and strip clubs. As you can do either of those things at home, check out Paris or The Man's suggestions.
The beach is close by. Santa Monica or Venice (during the day) are good bets.
Otherwise, consider the Grove shopping extravaganza at 3rd and Fairfax, with the farmer's market across the street. That'll keep you so busy, you may not make your flight.
A week ago I would have suggested tootling up to the Griffith Park Observatory. But unless you like looking at charcoal briquettes, (which presumable you can also do at home), then stick with the beach.

Based on your schedule, taking a cab to Santa Monica or Venice is a great idea. You could rent a bike and take the path from Santa Monica Pier to the Venice boardwalk, or vice versa. On the Santa Monica Pier, there's a Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, where you can have a nice meal. That's a nice way to spend a few hours. Everything else on my Top Ten List probably takes too long. You might even have time for the Third Street Promenade.
You could even get together with "V", who asked the same question just a few hours ago. Maybe you can even share a cab.

Traffic is really not as bad as they say . . . just don't drive during the morning and afternoon commutes. If you stay in Long Beach, you're pretty much close to the ferry to Catalina Island, as well as be centrally locatated for Disneyland. You can take the less traveled route to Disneyland (most approach Disneyland from the north, whereas you'll be approaching from the south). You can drive to Hollywood in the early afternoon and stay in the neighborhood into the evening, when traffic should be more manageable. However, parking in Hollywood might be a bit tough, but still very do-able.

MADRE---This question comes up a lot....so that is why I am starting my "LAX time to kill Whirlwind Tour Service, Inc."----LOL
He can:
1. Walk the Santa Monica Pier,
2. take a quick stroll through the 3rd St. Prominade shopping area,
3. Stop for a quick check out of Venice Beach on the way back to the airport...
Hope you enjoyed your tour , that will be $20.00 American please......
