why do my legs ache so much when I am running. I do not feel particularly out of breath, but have to stop because of my legs. Is there anything I can do to prevent this?
thanks

If you are new to running that could be one reason why your legs are hurting, because they aren't used to it. Also, they could be hurting as a result of not doing enough to warm them up before you get started.

Stretching before a run and also staying hydrated can help your legs. Please also get in touch with your dr for some additional suggestions and thoughts on this issue.

I agree with the other answers you have received here. You can try cutting back on your running for about three days. Give the muscles a rest. They are crying for a rest, pain is a message that something is wrong.

Take a hot bath with 2c. of dissolved Epsom salts and soak for 30 minutes. This will help relieve some of the pain. do this every day.

Use Advil tablets three times daily for the inflammation And pain.

if you don't feel better in a week see your medical doctor.

I think you should drink lots of water to stop preventing it. But my best advice is that to start running everyday. Because you're probably not used to the running so you're legs aren't either! So try on drinking a lot of water and running everyday so you and your body will get used to it! =D

Any of the above, but could also be your muscles are not getting enough oxygen and are therefore switching to anaerobic respiration. This produces acid which collects and causes aches and pains.
If this is the case, it ties in with the people suggesting poor circulation.

Check with your Doc first but it is probably poor circulation. There is an herb in the health food store called Horsechestnut Root. This herb is especially for leg circulation. I used it and it improved the circulation in my legs.

It sounds to me like muscular pain or 'shin splints'. I would take the running more easy and slowly build up to increase the distance you are running. If there is pain it means that something is wrong and you should not be running like you are at the moment.
