Im having a dull ache below my sternum. It just started a few days ago. Seems it hurts when I lay down (bc I sleep on my stomach) and also when I eat or drink anything. I cant tell if its coming from my sternum, muscles, or GI tract.... I've been reading on the Mayo Clinic site, but I couldnt find anything specifically embodying my symptoms.

The closest thing I found was Costochondritis. (Bc it feels more like a muscle ache than anything... It isnt a burning feeling, but more like a pressure that comes and goes every 5 minutes or so... and its been like this for a few days, so its not a heart attack.... plus its below my sternum (breast bone)... not in my chest cavity...

If you guys can help me, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thx so much!

First thing you should do is try sleeping on your back. Sleeping on the stomach causes stress on the spine. This can put your whole spinal column out of place. I know that it's difficult to learn a new sleeping position, but I had to do it and I know it can be done. This could possibly be what is causing the pain in the sternum.

My other thought is constipation. The intestines run across the area you have described. If you are not having regular bowel movements or having to force them, that would indicate constipation. If that is so you have to start taking a powdered fiber supplement first thing in the morning and last thing at night. Also increase eating fresh fruit, whole grains cereals, and brown rice.

Be sure you are drinking a minimum of eight glasses of water a day.

If none of this seems right for you, check with your medical doctor as soon as possible.

If he's still putting weight on it even occasionally, this sounds much more like a strain or sprain than a break, but it will still be painful. Check first that there is no simpler answer like a thorn in his pad, then check the whole leg for heat and swelling - if you find a very hot spot, suspect a bigger problem, and you will have to get him medical help. If the leg feels fine, and he doesn't seem to be in too much pain with it, you can try putting hot and cold compresses on alternately - but the most important thing is to limit his exercise strictly for at least the next three weeks. This means no running, no climbing up and down stairs, no playing ball etc etc - keep him as confined and sedentary as possible to allow this injury to heal.

I have costochondritis and the symptoms that it causes can be varied, and yes that can include making it feel more like a muscle such as a pulled muscle.

The other thing with costochondritis is that it can sometimes make a woman think she's having a problem with her heart or lungs when it's not.

Another thing that this could be is that of having gas trapped. I've had gas get trapped around my ribcage before and the longer it stays there it can cause a lot of pain.

You could try some Gas-X to see if that helps clear the problem. If you are still having problems by Mon I would recommend getting in touch with your dr to have them evaluate the situation to see what they think could be causing this.
