Just read the first sentence: "in the begining god created the heavans and the earth." Thats absurd. The earth was created much later than the 'heavans', whatever that is supposed to mean. And as astronots prove every time they go up in space there is no guy sitting on a throne in 'heavan' where there are 'waters' flowing this way and that (comes later).

On the other hand, this part of the Bible is suprisingly consistent with primitive superstisons popular in that day.

atheists "lurking" in the religion and spirituality is not an oxymoron......do you NEED a God to have a religion or to be spiritual? i think not...i'm a Buddhist and i have every right to be here as any christian, hindu, jew ,wiccan etc

the fact that christians seem to consider every religion other than their own, false relgions, may i suppose explain their attitude of thinking that the whole world is divided into "christian" and "non religious".

In this case "the heavens" simply means "the cosmos" or "the universe". And of course the earth is part of that mix. The Bible does not give an exact time line either. To put it forward as being a science text is misinterpretation of it. The "six days" that are mentioned are not to be interpreted literally of course. They're a literary device. In the timeline of an infinite spirit being such as God, a "day" could span billions of years. Think about it. It is a poetic and allegorical way of explaining that God created all that exists out of nothing. It doesn't in any way nullify science or stand opposed to it. The "big bang" could have very likely happened. The Bible doesn't go into those sort of details, nor should it be expected to.

No, there is no "guy in space sitting on a throne". God is a spirit being that is in and around everything He created. God is also not a he or a she. We say "He" partly out of custom, and partly because of the limitations of our own English language.

Is the Bible true? Yes, it's true in the message that it's conveying, which is man's relationship to God and vice versa - that's what the Bible is really all about.

what you said is true by the way its God not god, the god the small g is satan's title the BIG "G" is God's and by the way again Hebrews 13:8, John 8:58, John 1, all tell of Jesus being God, in John 8:58 He is described as I AM, and He was the person of The Godhead that created this earth and the heavens as you said is what we call sky where the bodys are like the sun, moon ect. and no in Gen.1 we read evening and morning were the first day evening and morning were the second day, sundown to sundown is how God tells time and that amount of time sundown to sundown is 24 hours and in SIX DAYS God created Heaven and earth and rested and blessed the seventh day [Saturday is that seventh day NOT the first day sunday, that sunday is a tridition man made] find out more free bible lessons www.amazingfacts.org email me also wgr88@yahoo.com God bless

As others have said, that part does not mean that the heavens (in this case, meaning space, or the cosmos) and the earth were created at the same time. It does not give a specific timeline.
Secondly, God is not in space sitting on a throne. The throne is in Heaven, not in the heavens.

The bible is the most sold world wide, why? it is a book that "everything" can be found. It is a metaphoric passage into ones life, that applies to what each person is seeking...
The blinders are put because each person reads it for themselves... it shows how narrow minded people are and will remain,,, \Its very easy to take advise that agrees with you.... or if you are weak end by something...
Who ever wrote the book understood human thought, but it is a book to make people "good" so in my mind let it be....

Dear angelwit,

When the Bible refers to the heavens (it is talking about the expanse of sky that is above the earth- which we know as "space"). It is not referring to Heaven (where God dwells). This is probably a lot more clear in the Original Hebrew. There are Christians who draw the conclusions they draw not based on "blind faith" but a reasonable faith.

i hope that answers your questions and more than that, please also understand that people who don't believe in the Bible often do read it with blinders as well.

Kindly,

Nickster

Good answer Rhapsody. LOL. Besides Jesus never read that....that is how the Bilble begins to give the creation process. Notice the word process. If you keep reading more than the first few verses, you will actually answer your own question. Sad to say, you are the one reading the Bible with blinders on.

Most of the genesis accounts was actually derived from the much earlier Sumero-Akkadian 'creation' account, the enuma elish, and atrahasis for the 'flood' story. The hebrew myth is propagated from there.

Has it ever occurred to you that you are the one reading the Bible with blinders on?
