bangkok would be my chocie for you, i live on less the 1600 a month and put the rest into savings. The broadband is better then any remote areas in the country, however your going to have to limit your nite life a little bite.

Thai baht is strengthening quite rapidly: of course in much of the same direction with the rest of the Asian currencies. First, you must define the level of comfortable living in Thailand would be. To live just above the poverty line, 300-400 dollars will do. A decent living with family, 1500 is ok. If you make 5000 dollars a month you can effort to take roots here with nice condo and a car, sending kids to school. With 10000 a month over, well you can go crusing on luxury ships three times a year. Your kids to private international school, and later probably a boarding school in the UK or Switzerland and may be Oxford or Cambridge degree. Thailand and Bangkok would be heaven with Ferrari or Lamborghini with your own boat a villa near the beach, a resort house by the open national park at Khao Yai with live animals on the free, and flying lesson or even small jet plane with ten million dollars a year over. I'd like to think the last one is comfortable.

Most accommodations in Bangkok are affordable and well within your budget.
1. Go to www.yellowpages.co.th
2. The page will open in Thai.
3. Select ‘English’
4. Enter the search for ‘serviced apartments’.
After that, all you have to do is select the accommodation within your budget.
Almost every serviced apartment has an ADSL Internet connection. which is free for guests.
Try to select a location near any of these streets which are in central Bangkok.
An important factor is the location which should be close to the Skytrain (light overhead railway). Any of the following streets should be your first preference.
Pleonchit, Lang Suan, Sukhumvit between the lanes called Sois, branching off from Sukhumvit Road. Pick any Soi between numbers 1 to 44.

The answer is that you can live anywhere you want on that amt of money - I have friends living in bkk on a fair bit less.. For fairly lively, you might try Jomtien, just a speck south of very lively Pattaya.. I was just in Chiang Mai yesterday and it seems every time that I am there, internet is ok, but just a tad slow.. not sure abt Pattaya, Jomtien.. as to the issue of working on the internet and work permits, you might want to toss that out as a separate question... my guess is that if the money is not generated from something here, like buying and selling, you should be ok.. Hua hin might be a nice place to live for a couple of months - - I live upcountry and a decent Western style house here rents for abt $120 a month, but the nightlife consists of waiting for sunrise... good luck

you will find it a lot cheaper up North or North East. I stayed for a month in AEK Apartment in Udon Thani for 5000 baht a month. I had VIP apartment with en-suite, Double bed , TV and fridge and air-con. ( maid service daily) The underground car park is secure and there is laundry, shop and coffee shop on premises as well as security. There is also an international hospital in the grounds and a dentist (open 7 days a week) The basic rooms start at 3000 baht a month.
The apartments are close to the action downtown. Night bazaar, bus station, train station, bar life and restaurants. You can eat at the buffet style restaurants for 99 baht ( all you can eat) and live music Great value.

Pattaya. The city is very tourist oriented and there are scores of serviced apartments with high speed Internet connections available. Search the classifieds/ property pages at http://www.pattayapeople.com
That should give you a fair idea of prices.
EUR 1200 will make around THB 54,000. In Pattaya, a serviced studio should cost you around THB 10k to 15k per month depending upon the location.

Chiang Mai is a lively and interesting city I would like to recommend. I know from a friend who lives there that fast broadband internet access there is available. My friend also runs an apartment building for rent with access to internet.

I like your first answer, he seems to now what he is talking about, I suggest you get back in touch with him and ask for more details on how you go about finding suitable accommodation, I worked in the area for about a year , the company paid for mine, so I cant really help on that score, Remember you are looking for very 'short term' accommodation .
This answer is not so much an answer but a vote of confidence , I admire your short term move and wish you all the best, I know you will enjoy it, I certainly did, the people are great and all very help full.

Working? Watch out,pls...You might be in big trouble without a work permit even though you think no-one will know working "at home" on Internet. Seen very unpleasent stuff with guys that did the same...If EVERYHING is legal,of course then go ahead and as already mentionned take a choice with a perfect Internet-Access. (Bangkok will be quite tight on your budget, though). Wish you a nice stay in amazing Siam!

you can find good standard serviced apartment in Bangkok with wireless broadband internet at the cost of ~ 12,000 - 25,000 bht/month. You'll have 40,000 - 50,000 bht left for your meal/transportation and entertainment (more than enough as it would cost you no more than 300 - 500 bht/day).
Please note the apartment may not be in the heart of the city or business area as the rental rate for the same standard may cost you 20-50% more.
