My position on my moral beliefs should not have to overlap yours or anyone elses. That is the general premise behind separation of church and state in the US. Unfortunately, as you stated the Catholic church has a huge influential impact in the southern hemisphere. I may have my personal stand on abortion, but I won't incorporate it into someone else's lifestyle because it wouldn't make any difference. Those are personal decisions made by a woman, at times their partner, and between their doctors and ministers. Women's health issues are also at stake, moreso in third world nations. Does the pope want women to resort to the coat hanger? Brazilian politicians will have to be like some American politicians who stand for abortion rights. They will have to make a determination if they have enough "bollecks" to stand up and do what their people desire. The pope has no vote in Brazil.

The Catholic church is against abortion. In a way, anyone that states that they are catholic in a public forum is representing the church on a greater scale than the everyday church member is. If they are voting for something that the church stands against, then they are saying that they are not representing the church very well at all. To say that there are no abortion supporters in the catholic church is just naive. There are some there, but someone being in the public eye is different. The Catholic church has a fairly bad image right now, and they want the people that are in the public that are associated with the church to stand for the SAME things the church stands for. In a way, it does make sense on some level. But, on another level, I disagree with kicking someone out of the church. If members think that someone is doing something against the church, the right way to go about correcting them isn't to first kick them out of their fellowship.

Do not forget that while growing up in Nazi Germany, Joseph Ratzinger joined the Hitler Youth.
The pope is supposed to be the successor of Peter, leader of the Christian Church, and symbol of unity for all Christendom.
The past actions -- or inactions -- of such a person matter a great deal if anyone is going to treat him as any sort of moral authority. Violence, and hatred existed outside his local community.

By voting in favor of abortion rights, the politicians have already removed themselves from the Catholic faith. The Pope is merely making official what the politicians have already done.

All the good ones forgive me but that's why I've always hated the Catholic Church. They think the Pope is Godlike. He pees & poops just like the rest of us & I bet he tells people to **** off behind closed doors

They are threatening their association to the church. Which would probably not be a bad thing in the case of the Catholic Church! I believe they are a cult created to fool as many souls as possible.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Catholic and on the whole I don't believe what they teach is the truth about what the Bible teaches.
However, as a Christian Jehovah's Witness, I do believe that a human embryo is a person in the making, and therefore to have a abortion is the same as murder (Psalms 139:16, Job 31:15).
Saying that, I also believe that true Christians shouldn't get involved with politics (James 4:4, Ephesians 6:12).
Psalms 139:16
Your eyes saw even the embryo of me,
And in your book all its parts were down in writing,
As regards the days when they were formed
And there was not yet one among them.
Job 31:15
Did not the One making me in the belly make him,
And did not just One proceed to prepare us in the womb?
James 4:4
Adulteresses, do YOU not know that the friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever, therefore, wants to be a friend of the world is constituting himself an enemy of God.
Ephesians 6:12
because we have a wrestling, not against blood and flesh, but against the governments, against the authorities, against the world rulers of this darkness, against the wicked spirit forces in the heavenly places.

What is your confusion?
Now, pay attention while I explain it: Brazilian politicians will obey, without question, the words of a celibate ex-Nazi who claims to speak on the direct behalf of God, or they will burn in the fires of hell for all eternity.
See? It's quite easy.
Just catch up with the modern times! This is not the old days any more... we are living in the 12th century now!!

That's not a threat against life, it's a threat against membership in the church. And yes, people who kill babies shouldn't be given membership in churches; maybe churches of Satan or some such, but not one that worships God and values human life.

huh? Could you help me better understand your question? The Pope did not threaten their lives. He didn't even damn them.
It just means the Vatican won't recognize them as members.
Or did you mean do I think that he should? No.
