Hamsters are nocturnal animals - in their natural habitat (the Syrian desert) they only come out of their burrows at night to find food, because most of the predators are asleep. They run in the wheel all night because they have a high metabolism, and if they didn't run off all that energy, they would die even sooner than they naturally do.

In the wild hamsters would travel up to 8 miles a night on those little legs of theirs in search of food, so hamsters that are domesticated are just playing out an instinct that is built into them. But yes, your right, you would think that they would realise they are not getting anywhere fast!
Hamsters diets can be quite high in fat to as they love sunflower seeds, hazlenuts, monkey nuts etc, and being in a cage all day can cause obesity in hamsters so its actually a way for them to kep healthy too.
Me and my husband have had our male hamster a year, and he's no ones fool. He has never played on his wheel the whole time we have had him, so we have to make sure he comes out of the cage at least an hour every day to exercise.

Since hamsters are naturally nocturnal, the best time for them to exercise is dusk to dawn. You can keep the wheel a little quieter by putting Vaseline where the wheel joins the pins. The Vaseline will not hurt the hamster and you will be able to sleep a little better. Maybe you can provide more chew toys like cardboard tubes or add more toys for the hamster to climb around the cage in.

Hamsters are a party animal they stay up at night and sleep during the day. A hamster runs an avg. of 5 miles a day in the wild, so its gotta run to get excersice, if not they will become lazy and not want to move. The reason for the chewing on the bars, yes its very annoying but the teeth of the hamster always keep growing so it chews on the bars to help keep them from over growing. also give ur hamster paper towl rolls, chew toys as other ways to help. also i have heard they like the taste of the bars.

He's trying to escape!!! No not really they are nocturnal. Like most creatures of the night they are open to prey in the day. Its not a good idea as one person said to set it free, our English rats will kill it, it would not survive! And you can not reason with a hamster, its programed to do what it does. If your grandson is happy that's all that matters, and id suggest you get a booklet on hamsters and there habits, were they are from, to help you understand them more. Happy days,

Snap, my Daughter's bites the bars, she had a wheel but we bought her a bigger cage 19-99 in Wilkinson's it has tunnels she now runs up, and down them, she does not use the wheel anymore.Have you got it a ball ? you can buy them in pet shops , you take the top off put the hamster in put the top back on, let the hamster run around the room { mind there are no steps } Ours is in it for about an hour, she goes back in her cage, eats, then bites the bars again !!!!

hamsters are nocturnal meaning they sleep during the day and play at night.
hamsters need lots of exercize and so they run in there wheel alot, also hamsters teeth never stop growing and so they have to chew on something this is probably why they chew on the cage bars.

hamsters are nocturnal(wich means that they sleep during the day and are active at night.)the running wheel is very helpful with the hamster and is great excercise for him.go to your local pet store and ask for wooden chew sticks.theese will be a subsitute for the bars on his cage and will be alot quieter.hamster's teeth are constantly growing,so their teeth need wore down so they don't have heath/dental problems in the future.the chew sticks will be more comfortable for your grandson's hamster and will be more heathier.when the chewstick gets small enough that the hamster could possibly swallow it,replace it with a fresh one.
good luck!

He does it to get exercise. In the wild hamsters will wander miles each night looking for food.
The chewing is to wear down his teeth.Hamsters are rodents and their teeth grow constantly so they need to chew on hard things a lot to keep them down.
As for sleeping all day that's not because of the exercise it's because hamsters are nocturnal-i.e. they only come out at night.
