I was raised by a Farmers daughter. The principals still apply in daily life no matter what is needed to be done.

What do I do? What ever is needed to be done.

How do I do? I do what ever needs to be done and learn a little more about the chore each time, so I get better at it until the next time.

Malaysians in general will answer in this manner. When someone asks you what do you do? It usually refers to your occupation. You may answer "I am a student". As for how do you do? It usually refers to your well being. You may answer "I'm fine, thank you"

In Brit Eng, 'What do you do?' usually refers to your occupation - e.g. answer with 'I'm an engineer'

'How do you do?' in "correct" circles requires the response 'How do you do.' It's not so much a question these days, rather a greeting. All the same, many people answer 'Fine thanks, and you?'
