Four still alive as of 4/28/07. The four known surviving World War I veterans are John Babcock, 102, Puget Sound, Wash.; Frank Buckles, 106, Charles Town, W.Va.; Russell Coffey, 108, North Baltimore, Ohio; and Harry Landis, 107, Sun City Center, Fla. There were 5 but one recently died in Maryland. It was in the news. His name was Brown and he lived at the Charlotte Hall home off Route 5 in Maryland.

I remember this because he almost certainly had the same dentist (!) that I had from 1988-2001. Dr. Morgan, DDS, has his practice right down the road in Mechanicsville, Maryland, and has done a great deal of charitable work for the residents at Charlotte Hall. So I remember the story of Brown's death.

There's been another story about the few WW1 veterans still alive. It was put out by the VA and published by the Washington Times, which I have the link for and pasted below.

Well, according to this Wiki...
there are 29 verified surviving veterans of the First World War (that is the total of ALL countries including the U.S. and it's allies)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surviving_veterans_of_World_War_I

Obviously, that figure can change on a daily, if not hourly, basis.
Also, depends on how recent that information is but, at the bottom of the page is this:
"This page was last modified 15:47, 11 May 2007."

Verified veterans of the First World War - 29 veterans
Living in Australia - 4 veterans
Living in Canada - 1 veteran
Living in France - 4 veterans
Living in Germany - 4 veterans
Living in Italy - 6 veterans
Living in Poland - 2 veterans
Living in the UK - 3 veterans
Living in the USA - 5 veterans

FYI:
Lists of known WWI Veterans deaths by year:
1999 (258) | 2000 (171) | 2001 (123) | 2002 (118) | 2003 (104) | 2004 (116) | 2005 (82) | 2006 (50) | 2007 (24)

The answer is 3 or 4, depending on specifically what you mean by "US WWI vets." John Babcock is American, but he served in the Canadian Army.

I think the last one died within the last 2-3 months. It was on the news. I assume you can google it and find the story. The person would be around 107 years old
