Is draining the fat from "normal" ground beef just as effective as cooking ground beef that is already extra lean?

in my opinion, no its not. draining the excess fat is a good practice but there is still going to be fat trapped in the meat. the extra lean is more expensive but if you are trying to reduce fat, itss worth it if you are going to eat ground beef, another alternative to ground beef is ground chicken or turkey. ground chicken and turkey are both lower in fat and both taste pretty good. they do have a tendency to clump up while cooking just like the extra lean beef does though, so you have to keep breaking it up with the spatula while its in the pan.

For getting more fat out of ground meats, try this. After browning the met, drain it as best you can conventionally. Then add hot water and bring the ground meat to a simmer for a few minutes and then drain off the water along with more grease.

Can do the same with higher grade beef or even with turkey and chicken. Watch the turkey however. Alot of ground turkey is made from the dark meat. You'd be surprised at how much fat there is in dark turkey meat. Pretty close to decent beef if I remember correctly.

Out family usually eats venison and that is lower in fat content than all the others.
