I have tried to get information about this painting and have received some good tips but still no answer about whom the artist is or the value of the painting. I have downloaded pictures to this URL- http://s190.photobucket.com/albums/z309/mnmgonzalez/
The signature is M. ALI in the lower right hand corner. Thanks if you give me information or leads on who the painter is or how to get the value.

In the Arabic world the name Ali is as common as the name Smith or Jones is in America. So there could be a million people who could have painted and signed the name M. Ali. and trying to track down such a name would take a lot of time and effort and perhaps a great deal of luck.

Although this painting does look at least 40 to 60 years old it still has the look and style of a 'tourist' painting, the type commonly sold on the streets of cities anywhere from Paris to Cairo to tourists. The artists who are paid to paint these are paid not by how creative they are or by how well they can paint but by how many they can paint a day. In other words, they are paid by the piece.

This does not mean that this painting isn't pretty to look at and that you or someone else will enjoy hanging it in your home. But it is hardly likely than a 'tourist' painting like this is of any real value to a collector or dealer.

Just my opinion, but it looks kind of "touristy" to me. Also, the canvas is getting damaged from not being on a stretcher. Paint is going to start coming off where it's creased. It needs conservation care, but first you need to find out if it's worth it or not.

Are you near a large library? Find a copy of Benezit and look it up. The book is in French, but you can look the author's name up. If he is a known artist, he will be in there, along with some dates and some info you can have translated if you dont speak French.

You could also send your photos to Southeby's in NYC and ask them to render an opinion.

Until you know, just take care when rolling and unrolling it. I would look it up for you, but I dont own a Benezit. I wish I did. It costs around 1600 bucks which is why you have to find a large library. Try a university library that has an art dept. My college had one. Pax - C

Unfortunately I have no idea who painted the picture….

But with the increase of aboriginal art demand there has been a high insurgence of theft in Africa and Australia to provide merchandise to the USA. I am in no way saying that this painting is stolen or anything but to all who read my post please ask for some type of PROVENANCE when purchasing art.

This also increases the value of your painting, sometimes by thousands of dollars in the future.

Good luck with the hunt on your quest.

I use a double important palette with a few earth tones. Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Light, Yellow Ochre, Grumbacher Red, Alizarin Crimson, Cerulean Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber. You can combine any colour you desire from this palette. However, I usually use Viridian Green (mainly with Ultramarine Blue) for water in a few seascapes. All different veggies I combine with the blues and yellows. I make black with Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Umber. Grays are combined with complimentary colours (i.e. pink and yellow) and white which makes it possible for you to regulate your grays and cause them to extra exciting. Painting maintains me sane. OH! And I use Liquin portray medium. It makes the paint dry quicker, however now not too rapid.
