Some have said that it depended on your motive or feeling behind it. I said that doesn't this matter when you lie or steal for a good cause and it apparently didn't. So isn't this somewhat contradictory? That a sin is a sin no matter what but yet when it comes to war it's different. I hope you can see what I mean or the point I'm trying to make.

I'm glad someone brought up that about holy wars and christians being in war because I think that just kind of shows how it's sort of unfair. Like if it deals or it's for a cause of god it's okay but if it doesn't it's not. But thank you to all for taking the time to answer.

ALL BUT:
- Sanctioned by *your* government (as opposed to the other guys'.) ... This is not necessarily *right*, BTW.
- Self-Defence when *your* life's in mortal danger.

Murder is killing someone on purpose. It is planned and done with malice and usually forethought. There are different types of murder, which is why there are Murder 1, 2, etc. Murder 1 is where you think about it, make plans, get the murder weapon, set up the time, then go out and do it. It's the most serious of all murders. There are other types of murders, like in the heat of the moment, when you are pushed into it by the situation, there is of course self-defense, which is murder, but you usually don't go to jail for that, if you can prove that.
But killing someone in war is not considered murder, even though you have killed someone. It is sanctioned killing. Sort of kill or be killed, so it's looked at differently. You don't go to jail for that.
For murder it has to be done for a reason, not war, but in an everyday situation. There is no reason that gives anyone the right to take another person's life. If someone if threatening you, it is your right to call the police and report that you are being threatened. The police should give you help in that situation to save your life. You should not take the situation into your own hands, if you do, even if you have been threatened, it is murder.
Hope I've been of some help here.

Murder is the unlawful killing of a human being with "malice aforethought." The element of malice aforethought can be satisfied by an intentional killing, which is considered express malice. Malice can also be implied: deaths that occur by extreme recklessness or during certain serious crimes are considered to be express malice murders. The maximum penalty for murder is usually life imprisonment, and in jurisdictions with capital punishment, the death penalty may be imposed. As with most legal terms, the precise definition varies between jurisdictions. Unlawful killings without malice are considered manslaughter.

Murder is taking the life of another by planning it out before hand and actually having a strategy for it. By murdering a person, you are taking revenge on the person because you know when, where, and how to kill the person. Thus, murder involves a great deal of planning and thinking before actually executing the action.

It is all in the name of who you speak for and by what authority you do things in which they are judged.

For instance, a climatologist was just told that he could not speak for an east coast university denying manmade global warming or he could lose his job. He is supposed to be representing the school and cannot say otherwise. But in speaking for himself, they dont care what he says.

Another example; How furious would God be with people that were scamming widows for their life savings? How much more furious would he be if they were using his name to do it? That is what it truly means to not take the Lords name in vain, not to use it for evil purposes.

With that being said, if Im fighting for my country, I am simply honoring civic duty and doing what I need to do provided that the cause is good. For instance, it wasnt very moral for nazi troops to do what they did. But when fighting for your country, you are fighting in the NAME of what your country stands for, you arent murdering anyone! (unless you knowingly target non-combatants who arent fighting for their country) So is capital punishment btw, you are only reacting to what has already been done and written in law which is a reflection of Gods law and justice.

So if I get mad at a guy in a parking lot and take a baseball to his head and kill him, that is murder because Im killing someone in my own name and trying to take authority that I dont have.

It is GOD that owns human life, not us. We may have to fight wars and enforce the law, but beyond that, the taking of life is murder plain and simple, abortion included.

Murder is when you unrightfully take someones life from them against their will. A war is not murder...because...its fighting for something that is yours...for example..if someone was trying to kill them...and in defense you killed them first. that is not murder...because it was out of defense...and you were fighting for something that is yours...and thats your life. so a war is not murder...because they may be fighting over land....or it may even be an invasion...but a war is no murder...if it was..in the Bible....God would have said so. David was like the greatest king of israel...God was talking to him...and david fought many wars and won....God talked him and led him...and david found himself at war....and won just about all of them. God said this was okay...God practically told him to go to war. an invasion is also not considered murder...because an invasion is war...and war is not murder. its something that we cant explain...its just something that you 'know'

To knowingly take a life, not in a war, but by your own hand, either through rage, hatred, revenge, or envy is murder. There is no reason to justify taking the life of another.

War does cause many horrible deaths, but why it is not considered murder is because you are killing to protect yourself/your country. When someone kills in self defense, it is not an act of cold blooded murder. What we consider murder to be is when someone kills another person as a crime, not to protect themselves. Hope I made sense!

The actual textbook definition of murder is: The killing of another human being under conditions specifically covered in law. In the U.S., special statutory definitions include murder committed with malice aforethought, characterized by deliberation or premeditation or occurring during the commission of another serious crime, as robbery or arson (first-degree murder), and murder by intent but without deliberation or premeditation (second-degree murder).

One out of anger, or jealousy, or you just dont like the person. But its no reason, becuase it says love thy neighbor. The Bible may have stated it becuase back then it was like a Holy War, back then it was in the name of you know who.
