My mother is a chronic kidney disease patient for 14 years and has generally been well. She took iron sucrose medication 2 days ago due to low iron levels. While using the medication by infusion through the veins, she reported that she had back pain, stomach ache and muscle tightness. Her blood pressure was very low. The doctor stopped the iron sucrose drips. Her blood pressure had increased and her muscle tightness had also improved. She is OK now but she says that she feels weak. Is she OK? Will this cause extra damage to her kidneys or her health?

Adverse effects frequently experienced with iron sucrose therapy include hypotension (36%) and cramps/leg cramps .Nausea, headache, vomiting, and diarrhea have been reported in >5% of patients. Greater than 1% of 1,051 patients have reported congestive heart failure, sepsis, and taste perversion in 2 safety studies. Hypersensitivity to iron sucrose has rarely been reported. No data are available for use of iron sucrose in patients who have renal or hepatic dysfunction.

No she will not have neither,.
What your mum had, was an INTOLERACE reaction to the specific compound sucrose-Iron, which is not rare, when applied diluted by intravenos infusion..
Your mums kidneys and heart (and pancreas and liver) would be damaged if she suffered from excess iron (given before) with a copper pigment of the skin, together with induced diabetes, caused by excess iron, ...(bronzed diabetes or hemochromatosis),,,nothing that indicates that, only nephrogeinic anemia ( anemia caused by lackof secretion in the kidneys of erythropoietin,,quite common in chronic renal patients)....
However, the very fact that her iron was LOW, (not high in blood) in the analysis, means that she needs such element..
The musculary effects that yoiu describe, will subside in few days.. and she is protected from excess iron, if checked regularly for several parameters (apoferritin in plasma, iron binding capacity, and others)
However in the meantime, the doctor has to choose between an intramusculary compound (ferrous salts in dextran) or oral sulphate ferrous iron by mouth...unless she suffers from chronic gastritis..(upset stomach is a very common side effects of iron salts by mouth)
I repeat, the reaction was an individual response to Iron sucrose itself, not to the iron....The clue is to change the presentation and the ropute to administer the iron..
Good luck
