Well, if you do want to pay only for the
Windows XP upgrade pack, to do an upgrade only, versus paying for the full version, it is possible IF you have a copy of a previous operating system cd, such as Windows 98. Boot from the 98 cd, then tell it your want to reformat your drive. When this finishes you can just shut down, remove the 98 cd and boot again using the Windows XP upgrade cd - just keep that 98 cd handy as you'll need it to verify you are eligle for the upgrade instead of a full installation version. The upgrade will do the same as the full installation cd, it just forces you to prove you have the right to an upgrade.

no if its not a legal copy of xp you cannot upgrade you can however buy on at best buy, circut city or any computer store
check best buy and circut city websites for prices.but be careful sometimes when browsing online the website gives you a price and doesnt tell you its the online price not the in store price.Vista is great but its better if you have a dual processor.
and yes you can upgrade your xp to vista online IF you do have a legal activated copy of xp

You have to buy a genuine Windows XP installer CD. Look out for any authorized Microsoft dealer in your locality.

Sorry, but Microsoft won't very well let you upgrade from a bootlegged copy they never received money for. Not in the US, anyway.

I'm sorry.
First, let's see if it is illegal. Go to this link.
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/ww/windows/default.mspx
If it is illegal,go to
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss_sw/102-6191664-7445745?url=search-alias%3Dsoftware&field-keywords=Windows+XP
Be sure you get the CD with a product key.
