religion was originally created so we could have an explantation for things we couldn't explain, like lighting and earthquakes and the sun rising and setting. we now have explanations for all of these things wouldn't that make religion obsolete?

Just you being in this "Religion and Spirituality" section proves that it is not obsolete.

Even atheists can't ever stop talking about religion.

Does your religion make previous religions obsolete? No, I feel like it kind of validated it. My people were basically pagans, with a quasi-Viking philosophy, and a matriarchal heritage. Many of the worship aimed at nature and mother earth was good, some of the rituals (like killing your household when you die) was okay to go. They stayed that way for nearly 1000 years after Christ came along as well. They were great horsemen and archers. The method of worship that was adopted was actually in use for 1,000 years already, and is the same one that I grew up with. (The Divine Liturgy of St John Chrysostom, yay! which was taken from the Divine Liturgy of St James) So what I grew up with is something that helps me feel very connected to many many people who have come before me. My religion is obsolete? Many have said so throughout the ages, I guess time will tell. How to answer claims calling my religions false? well, I'm basically a wimp, the first time I heard other religions said Catholics were evil, I was devastated and upset for about 2 years. (I kid you not, I cried a couple times). Everything is in God's hands though.

If you mean that we finally know and not just for thousands of years but for only a few short centuries that the earth we live on is actually round and that we won't fall off of the edge if we sail away, and all sorts of things that we have finally gotten the religious authorities to accept without being burned at the stake, you are right! But guess what? In spite of the fact that the religions tried their best to keep us in the dark of all truths about life and the true God, the Living God had it all down neat and orderly in the only book on earth that ever claimed divine inspiration, the Bible! You find truths, information and such knowledge in that Book of books, that thousands of scientists and archeologists are now very much beleivers. More than that, they are now going out of their way to prove the Bible true and most accurate history book of all times! We should get with the program of the things we like to talk about and do what God asks us to in Thessolonians... to make sure of all things! Thank you!

P.S. Even people like "Madonna" was asked in an interview, about her main desire and replied that she would love to find the meaning of life! All she has to do is to read about it in God's word, the Bible! I suppose no one has had a chance to tell her yet! Hopefully she'll check us out! Who knows???
Edit!
By reading the answers above, isn't it so obvious when people speak of the Bible as to what is or isn't in it, and prove beyond a doubt that they never read it, such as Mark who thought that it speaks of a earth being flat? It's the opposite! If religious leaders would have only bothered to read it, they wouldn't have tortured those who did for telling the truth it contained!

yes, religion is obsolete because all those great unanswerable questions are answered...

Like what actually caused everything to exist?
What is your purpose in life?
Why do I exist?
How did life come to exist?
Exactly what is goodness and evil?
Where does beauty come from?
How does non-religion explain information?
How can non-religion explain any of these things?

Well when you come up with the answers (with actual evidence, since non-religious people use evidence) then i'll give your question a second though.

Until then, only one religion, only one God, only one truth exists in this world and all facts culminate to the God of the bible through Jesus Christ. Seek for yourself.

no way.

What you describe - about trying to explain why the unexplainable happens - this is not religion. It is instead superstition. Then people try to 'control' something called 'luck' with things like rabbit's foots.

Man has in his heart the idea that something and someone bigger than he is "out there." The question has always been - what and/or who?

The good news is that God wants to know us and to be known.

Almost, I'm guessing within a few hundred years or so religion will be a thing of the past. Unless of course society crashes again and we go thru another dark ages.

I agree with you completely... we have no need for religion now that we have explanations for things AND science to continue looking for answers to things we don't have explanations for yet. Science is ever-growing and changing as we learn new things all the time... religion is stagnant in dogma and falsehoods based on mythology.

Yep---the Gods of the gaps day is over--when society knows more--& behaves better than the deity he worships-(like laws that require people to be stoned to death)--the deity becomes redundant --as thousands of them already have--All the Gods created throughout history have seemed permanent to their followers--but eventually they disappear into history

I guess it's only obsolete for you and other atheists.
Religion still offers answers on so many other things than just the natural sciences.
