I want to say that they smeared them with peanut butter, but that probably isn't right! LOL.

I don't think the birds were real; the closeups of the people as they were being attacked showed pretty fake looking beaks, etc. I do recall hearing that the odd noises the birds made were all electronically made.

Hitchcock was a wonderful director and had a staff of first rate film editors working with him on his films. He was a genius at suggesting menace and terror, not like today's directors who insist on bloodbaths in the opening frames of their movies.

Okay, I'll bite---how DID they make them do that??

From Wiki

Hedren was told mechanical birds would be used for the terrifying and brutal attic scene. Instead, live birds were hurled at her by prop men for a week. When one nearly gouged her eye she became hysterical, collapsed and spent a week haunted by "nightmares filled with flapping birds". After visiting the set Cary Grant praised her as "one very brave lady".

The birds were probably trained frequently before hand, that's how they get all of the animals in movies to act.

We learned this in Cinema class in college-- they TIED the poor birds to the people. One woman was in the hospital for a WEEK because of it. He's one director that I do not respect, simply because of his blatant animal abuse and how he treated the women on his set...

the birds and people were filmed seperatly during the chase scenes. first they filmed the birds flying, then people running, and then put them together. fro the scenes in the room, mechanical birds were used.
