i have a 2002 nissan altima 2.5SL and the car will run/idle for a minute or two and shut off, run/idle for a minute or two and shut off again. the mechanic says it may be an idle control sensor, but i can't seem to find one anywhere, so if anyone has any idea to what the problem might be please help me, it would be most helpful.

The Idle Speed control is made into the throttle chamber. But what you describe sounds like crank shaft sensor. Your car may be involved in several recall campaigns. One recall deals with CKP sensor and reprograms the computer to look at crank and cam sensors to run the engine.

do you have a check engine light on . if not you may need you gas pedal reset and idle air relearn performed . your car does not have a idle valve to control the idle . it has a eletronic throttle control. meaning the computer control every thing ..the dealer can reset every thing for you

I'm willing to bet a sensor is malfunctioning. The only way to know for sure is hook it up to a diagnostic machine. Sounds like a problem as the onboard computer switches between open loop and closed loop.

on that one as new as it is id check the idle air control valve on it,that may be whats causing it to do this,if it wont idle right it sure wont run right, but on those they will get clogged up and it makes them not idle right,if i was you id go and get me a real good Haynes repair manual on that car,it will help you a lot, they have a lot of good information in them, and they are worth the 15 bucks they cost,i use them a lot because of the information they contain ,good luck hope this helps.
