Yes an only son can be drafted by SSS if he is within the age range. He may also serve in a war zone. However before a unit deploys to a hazardous area he will fill out forms. In those forms are questions that ask that and he may not go if he requests it.

We have no draft currently so he would only serve if he was drafted. The " Sole Male Survivor" cases have been done but I am not sure it is a simple task. The key words here are drafte vs enlistment. If your son enlists, he is obligated to go where he is sent. Making a sole survivor case after enlistment probably wont work.

Good question--I would have said "No, because there isn't a military draft", but a Google search surprised me because I believed in this day and age with our military being a volunteer one, there was no restriction because there is no draft call up and I had also failed to remember that young men still have to register for the draft. But there is a law that is in effect to cover surviving family members of one who has died as a result of military service. Thanks for expanding my knowledge.

Why do you care? You'll find one excuse or another to be a coward and skip out of the draft if you want to.
