The jeep has 360 amc with manual choke so I don't think it is a choke issue. Some times it does it and sometimes no. The problem is that it will idle in park just fine and has no problems but as soon as you put it in drive, the thing falls on its face and dies.

either weak spark or lean fuel mix. start by warming it up then applying 1\4 to 1\2 of manual choke if this helps then it is mostly fuel issue. check all possible vacum leaks, adjust or repair carb. if no improve ment when choked replace coil & inspect ignition system.

i suspect you may hav a large vacume leak or several small ones the 78 modle has a pcv valve located at the rear of the intake manifold and the hose to it may be your problem also a defective brake booster [do you hear a hissing noise that changes when you step on the brake?] another potential problem is a stuck partialy open egr valve good luck

I'd be checking it out with a vacuum gauge pull a vacuum line of the intake and check it shoulde be steady between 18-22 psi but start with the easy stuff vacuum leaks carb bolts loose or carb gasket leaking if you take a bottle of soapy water and spray carefully around the intake and carb base and notice any changes in idle you've got gasket issues. if not check all your emission stuff .check out www.allpar.com

the only thing i d say check on it would be the choke to see if its working right, and also check the coil or try another one on it,they will shut off like this when they get warm, and also cause the same thing yours is doing, right now that's all i can think of on it,good luck hope this helps.
