You can open any word document from any major word processing program in any other major word processor.

The major programs all import their competitors files so you can stay with their software, but receive files from friends who use different software.

You import the file. When you want to send to someone using THEIR format, you export to that format.

Not sure if you mean the program Word or a different word processing program.

Most software is downward mobile. For example, Word 2003 could open Word 97, Word 2000.

Word 2000 could not open Word 2003.

Word can open Wordperfect. Then again, there is a free online converter which will convert your Word document to another format. It is at www.media-convert.com.

Save the file as a "rich text file" under rich text format and then open it on the other program. I always save my documents two times: once in the program I'm using (such as Word Perfect) and again as a "rtf." However, it sometimes shifts things around or doesn't look quite the same opening in the new program. Just a warning!

Do you mean if a word document that was created, for example, in MS Word, can be opened with another program like OpenOffice? The answer would be yes :)
