Pool game question! help!!?

Question

okay, your lined up with the eightball and it is your last ball. You call corner pocket and you hit the eight ball in the hole, but before the eight ball goes in, it touches the side edge (rail) of the table. Does this shot still count if you make it, or do you have to call it as a bank shot beforehand?

The guys called it right so far. Here's the appropriate rule from the BCA website. These are world-standardized rules.

4.2 CALL SHOT
In Call Shot, obvious balls and pockets do not have to be indicated. It is the opponent’s right to ask which ball and pocket if he is unsure of the shot. Bank shots and combination shots are not considered obvious, and care should be taken in calling both the object ball and the intended pocket. When calling the shot, it is never necessary to indicate details such as the number of cushions, banks, kisses, caroms, etc. Any balls pocketed on a foul remain pocketed, regardless of whether they belong to the shooter or the opponent. The opening break is not a “called shot.” Any player performing a break shot in 8-Ball may continue to shoot so long as any object ball is legally pocketed on the break.

This is the way the professionals play. Call your pocket and make a legal shot. That's it. Some people get all bent out of shape about indicating every single cloth fiber that the balls will contact. In my personal opinion, I think some people like to play that way because they're insecure in their own skill playing by professional rules and they think that somehow this will give them an advantage over other players. The same goes for "last pocket". I'm really not a fan of made up bar rules. M.D.-BCA Instructor/Referee.

It is a win.....grew up playing with bar rules.....before I knew anything about BCA rules your shot would not have counted.....it had to be a clean shot into the hole.....either way, I always usually play with the same players and tournaments so no problem....but if you go into a new place or play someone you do not know....set the rules up to avoid any hassles......in BCA it is call pocket and how it gets there it does not matter.....had a team mate once call the pocket ...he shot way too hard.....the object ball was still rolling as the opponent came up to the table to shoot......the object ball after traveling from New York to LA came to go into the pocket he called.....talk about "PO'd".....almost started a fight!.....but it is call pocket.....you win!!

Forget about all these other "rules" and determine the rules with your opponent before the game starts. This is very important especially with 8-ball. Almost always, if you call the correct pocket you win despite contact with other balls and rails.

the rules are if the ball goes in the correct hole,,,there is no need to call the edge of the pocket,,,actually,,,you can carom off another ball also,,,there is no clear rule that says such call is necessary,,,,but generally,,,you ask your local pool owner about house rules.

Still counts if pocketed in the called pocket. Incidental contact with the cushion is not relevant
