John the Baptist was the return of Elijah.....the end days (now) will have two witnesses that will be untouchable for 3 and 1/2 years...some say that these are Moses and Elijah, some say other past Jews as well but no one knows....perhaps one will be Jewish representative and one a gentile.

thirdeye it is written that it is for man to die once. So it can't be moses cause he died before entering the promised land. So it has to be someone that was transfigured. One was
Elijah and the other was probably Enoch. These will be the last two witnesses. Christ didn't say that John the Baptist was Elijah , but rather that John came in the SPIRIT of Elijah.

You will have to go back and read that passage again. Jesus told the disciples, "I tell you the truth Elijah has already came and they did everything they wanted to him". Jesus was referring to John the Baptist. When the scripture spoke of John the Baptist in the Old Testament, it said he would come in the spirit and power of Elijah. Why? Because Elijah had the spirit and power to turn the people's heart back to God, just like John did in his days. So, Elijah is not coming back again, he has already came in the person of John the Baptist.

He will be one of the witnesses during the tribulation, after his time of sharing truth he will be killed and left in the street for three days for all of the world to see.

**When He mentioned John, He was saying Elijah was John and was telling them of His coming.
