Black screen is caused by an old version of messenger.Up date to a newer version.Help on webcams is found in messenger under help.

It could be that your webcam isn't a good brand, cheap and it isn't made exactly for videos but more for pictures. But if you're using a messenger, it could be that you have a different version messenger or just a whole different messenger.

Lens cap is on?
Maybe you ahve the brightness turned down in the software?
maybe you have the iris closed too far?
