I doubt that it matters but my vehicle is a '96 Explorer.

it is either a short or an open ground. an open ground is when an electrical device is powered on one side and is not able to close the circuit. I had a battery charger on my second battery for my RC car, and it caused the problem you are talking about when I only unplugged one side.

AM radio reception is subject to many electrical interference factors, not only in auto's but anywhere.
To try the best method of elimination, take your vehicle to any place that sells and install's radio's and stereo equipment, and they will no doubt install an antenna filter, not expensive and worth the money.

Yes if the radio's not grounded properly the AM signal can be interfered with. Most aftermarket radio come with a ground stud to mount in back of radio to ground to chassis just for that reason. If factory radio get wiring checked

Any electrical device emits small amounts of RF (radio frequency) energy. Your AM radio is just picking this up and playing it for you. The reason is there is probably a short somewhere in your vehicles electrical system. Check the ground wire on your radio.

there is a short somewhere. if you can live with it it might be no big deal but could lead to other wiring issues done the road. If is is all of those things interfering i would have that checked out somewhere you trust off course.

Not normal you have a bad ground or short somewhere but we are talking a.m.radio.
Check your antenna for looseness.I believe it's fender mounted on your vehicle.
