Some wedding seating plans (although they are not used much anymore) do in fact seat the parents with the wedding party. Most couples nowadays place the parents at a table close to the head table (if the couple has one).
Some couples also decide to set up another table close by for the wedding party, and sit a "regular" table with their parents. In most cases, anything goes, and you should do what will make you happy.

The parents sit at the closest table to the wedding party. But i am putting mine and my in laws at both ends of my table with us because i just want to be a little different from the usual.

I'm not Emily Post (the guru of wedding etiquette), but every wedding I've ever been to, the wedding party (bride, groom, bridesmaids/maid/ or matron of honor, and groomsmen and best man) sit at the head table facing all other tables, and then there are usually "tables of honor" closest to the wedding party table with the brides' parents, perhaps grandparents if there is room, adjacent to the groom's parents, and grandparents if there are room, and then aunts, uncles, closest relatives sit close to them, and then the further you get away in seating from the wedding party table go the least desirables -- only kidding -- I mean, you know, friends and neighbors and guests like that. Family first!

Only the wedding party sits at the head table. Parents sit at the table(s) closest to the head table. Both sets of parents can share a table or they can sit at separate tables with other relatives if they'd prefer that. But ultimately it's up to you.

Generally they sit at a separate table on the side of the bride (brides parents)/groom (grooms parents) with other family and friends.

You can go either way, depending upon room at the head table and what they may want to do as well.
