Can't believe your vet was no help. This is a very common problem and there is a product to stop this behavior. See link below:
http://www.entirelypets.com/forbid.html
Adding this powder to your dogs food will make the stool tase unpleasant and after a few times the dog should get a clue. You can eventually stop adding to the food once the bad habit has been stopped. Also, most vets carry this product as well.

One of my three dogs used to eat other dogs' stools, but only when it was dried out. This would happen, if I did not pay attention, while walking. Personally, I do not think it is good for them, since you do not know what kind of diseases are present.
I did a web search for reasons one time, and only discovered that no one really knows why dogs do this. Lots of theories, but no one knows, I am convinced.
I would not let my dog eat it, if it were my dog. When it is finished "doing," pick it up and move on. If it is in your own yard, keep it picked up.

I know it is icky!
Make sure you instantly clean up his poop when he goes.
Take a weekend to train him....get something that makes a loud noise, like two put tops to bang loudly together. Make the sound when the dog goes for some poop. The noise will startle him and eventually will assoicate the noise with eathing poop and he will not want the noise and hopefully stop it. You need to be consistant until he learns this. That is why I suggested a weekend or a stretch of time when you can be consistant with the startling noise.

I'm not sure why it happens, but I do know where you can order something that makes them stop eating their stool. Web site listed below. after getting on the web site, type in Stop Stool Eating. Good luck.

Pretty disgusting but some dogs like it. Clean up the yard as much as possible but also add a dessert spoon of pineapple to his dinner. This makes the poo less tempting to them.

Well, since he obviously hasn't outgrown the habit yet, you need to be picking up immediately after he eliminates. If it's not there, he can't eat it! Does he know what the word 'no' means? Go outside with him and teach him.

That's not normal if your dog eats his own poop. When he's done going to the bathroom outside, then you should clean it up.
