Sergeants, when you find yourselves walking around post, nitpicking about the appearance of random objects that have NO RELEVANCE except in a book of regulations in which you may find yourselves asking rhetorical questions to those "below" you such as: "What's that string hanging out of your pocket?" you're just giving everyone the impression of the following: that you DO NOT have anything to do, that you want to feel like something big and important, that you are an incapable "leader" and you were probably promoted by default and that you may have repeated the 4th grade 3 times since you still use that awful phrase that starts with a big H. Morons.

Welcome to discipline, and attention to detail. How about a rhetorical question of "have you cleaned that weapon?" mmmm..just might keep a troop alive. Attention to detail has more than once kept a troop alive. Ooops I forgot to hook up my parachute correctly..details..details..I have more to do than to go around correcting every grade below mine. I'm the guy at the top that directs policy to those below. I am a Sergeant Major and as far as "4th grade 3 times" you blithering oxygen thief I have a M.S. (that's Master of Science Degree in Computer Science and Advance Mathematics). If it takes me addressing those Soldiers below me to pay attention to detail to keep them alive I will, and I have. It is my job as a Non Commissioned Officer to run the daily business of the Army. I not only train Soldiers, but also young officers. There is no military in the world that has an NCO Corps such as ours. Go crawl back under that rock that you came from.

If that is the biggest correction you hear, you are doing ok. It is the little things that make a soldier disciplined or not. If I have to tell you to get a hair-cut, I bet I will have to tell you to perform your real job to standard. It is the attention to detail in these "no relevance" objects that keep soldiers alive. And as for the 4th grade thing... You're a dumba$$!! I have a BBA and I am one of the least educated NCO's in my unit. Stop crying because someone corrected you. There are weak NCOs that do nothing but walk around looking for that stuff, I would rather do one of the 300 other things I have to do than correct you, but that is my job. Grow up...

The nitpicking is a way of developing a recruit's attention to detail.
If a small fault is overlooked at a crucial time, there could be serious consequences.
Examples include sea inlet valves on ships (3/4 shut is not closed), parachute riggings and harnesses (an unbuckled clasp will not control a jumper's descent), artillery weapon firing (oops - was that a hospital?), or a compromised fence line indicating a breach in security.

Ever see the movie, "DI" with jack Webb.
the troops are training, and told DO NOT MOVE! One moves, slaps a sand flea.
Jack Webb makes them dig a hole deep enough to bury a truck. They bury the flea.He then asks the trainee, did he bury the right flea.? THe trainee does not answer. jack Webb makes them dig up the flea to check and re-bury it.
Any one tell me why you DO NOT MOVE when told to do so? Because you give away your postion, and here comes a mortor shell, and you are now a KIA.
The Military has enough Generals, but will never have enough Chiefs, Gunnys and First Shirts.

Everyone else seems to have this one covered. . .
LOL
Army brat here! Mom and Dad both, I didn't sign up for it, but lived very close to what you've described.
What do you expect . . . you have to do everything by rote! If attacked in your sleep, the enemy isn't going to give you time to get coffee and wake up.

Bitter are we?
Like the other have said, details can save your life.
Plus, there is nothing wrong in taking pride in what you are doing or what you look like.
