Sociologically speaking, yes, ALL stereotypes are wrong, as they are all a manifestation of ethnocentrism. Sorry can't go into more detail here, but you might look it up with this direction in mind.

I dont believe there is one stereotype is 100% true about a particular group of people. Hoxever, I do believe there are true elements to most of the stereotypes out there. Here's one example... My husband is in the military. When I met him, I found out that a lot of the stereotypes about soldiers are true; some good and some bad. They are wild, passionate, patriotic, good-hearted boys with big toys. But those are the things that make my husband so lovable and amazing.

I think some stereotypes are self-perpetuating. What I mean is, lets say that everyone thinks girls like dolls, so every mother gets their daughter a doll. Then, because your mom gave you a doll, you do like it.
This doesn't mean that if there was some random crazy human all alone they'd pick a doll over a ball.
Then again, maybe girls do like dolls because they can recognize their faces and often would rather relate to other people than bouncing things. Maybe that is a stereotype!
Generally, you should just play it by ear. When you're meeting a new person don't assume dumb things about them, and just be polite. You should do this no matter what! Geez.

Stereotypes are merely conclusions we come to about groups of people based on what we have seen in individuals prior to meeting those people. Too, they can be opinions that we've come to based on what we've learned from other people about a particular group. A stereotype is merely a preconception. They can be good as well as bad. One might have heard that "Australians are friendly", or that certain aboriginies are canibals. Either of these may be true in individual cases, but they do not represent everyone in their respective groups.
A stereotype merely represents a notion that one might have about a group of people, that may or may not be true. The best course is to make up your mind AFTER meeting an individual.

stereotypes are nothing more than habits... we all have good habits and bad habits.... cultural stereotypes affect the whole culture that they've accepted over time.... when making fun of them .. the joke is only good for so long when we point them out if they are truly negative usually it's corrected..... the positive stereotypes always remain.... it's always nice to be complimented. and some of the funny ones we keep around just to piss off the rest of you eh!!! lol

I believe stereotypes often stem from truth, but often do a disservice to those who do not fit them.
So, I guess they're often true but its ignorant and rude to assume that EVERYONE fits them.
Blacks like chicken - Well, most of them do...but not all
Mexicans are good laborers - Well, my wife is Mex and she and her whole family can work like crazy...but the stereotype 30 years ago was that Mexicans are lazy.
Rednecks are ignorant - Not always, but many of the more vocal ones are
Gays are effeminate - Not all, but many have very feminine gestures, voices, etc.
Women are crazy - Not a stereotype...this one's a fact that even the ladies will back me up on.
and since we're in the religion category
MUSLIMS ARE VIOLENT - In this case, most AREN'T...however the most vocal ones ARE and that's what the rest of the world is exposed to
CHRISTIANS ARE IGNORANT FUNDIES - Again, most AREN'T...however the one's we most often hear from ARE and that's what we're exposed to.
JEWS ARE CHEAP - Actually, this one's a cultural thing that is true in many cases. I would assume that after 3000 years of turbulant history, they've learned to keep what they can.
SCIENTOLOGISTS ARE CRAZY - This one's pure opinion...one that I share :)
ATHIESTS ARE ANGRY / SAD - Not true. SOME athiests are FRUSTRATED...not angry. There's a difference.

I think that common stereotypes are based on aspects of cultures, but that doesn't mean that EVERYONE in that culture has those characteristics.
I generally believe that positive stereotypes can be good ie. asians are smart, blacks are good at sport, mexicans are good dancers, whites are successful, women are caring etc. Generally when it pertains to a positve thing then people are happy to accept them.

Most stereotypes are wrong.
There MUST be some that are okay, but I don't know what they are.
