when you try to bring up certain sections, then they say 'Oh we don't need to follow those.'?
Where in the bible does it say you can pick and choose which parts you get to follow?

Such as why they condemn homosexuality and slavery? Or how they now agree that animal sacrifice is wrong?

Douga and chrysa, you say we should follow the new testament, but not neccesarily the old. Why? If the old is no longer valid then why teach? If parts of it are no longer valid then why not exclude them? Oh, thats right, it's the infallible word of god.

The early editors and compilers of the bible chose to leave that verse out. Ain't life ironic?

Yeah, we are to follow the word of God to the letter. The Old and New Testament are both applicable to everyday life. When the apostles wrote the New Testament some of the things they wrote about came from scriptures unfolded from the Old Testament. But you will have to understand that alot of ceremonies which were done in the Old Testament pointed to the coming of Christ. For example, the slayings of lambs, bulls, and goats all pointed to the sacrifice of Christ. However, once Jesus actully came on the scene and gave his life, He fullfilled the ceremonial act. Now there is no need for sacrificial offerings since the ultimate sacrifice has now came. The Lord Jesus said Himself that I have not come to destroy the Law, but fulfill it. With Him fulfilling the Law certain applications were set aside. Some things written in the bible only stood until Christ came and left the scene. So it's not that we pick and choose. Rather we understand the Old Testament pointed to His coming. While the next point to His arrival and departure and the next life ahead. But 1Tim 1:8 says, "But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully (or correctly).

Jay,
According to the New Testament, "the Old Law (Testament) is for our learning". This means that we are not bound b y the Old Testament but by the New. We have been freed from it's requirements. I would be glad to personally answer any other questions that you might have. Just drop me a note.
Thanks,
Eds

Jurgen,
The Orthodox and Catholic Churches change their stance on religion every time they "elect" a new leader (pope). There is no pope mentioned in the scriptures and GOD's WORD is our LAW not a man's personal opinion that changes at his every whim. The Church is led by one and only one, THE MESSIAH, Jesus Christ! HIS church can be recognized by their following HIS FATHER's WORD.

Because they know if they followed every section exactly then they would not have any fun in their lives. They would lead a very restricted lifestyle.

Many religious people fail to realize that the bible is a guide and not necessarily to be taken as actual hard rules and regulations.

Many of the scholars who wrote the different sections of the bible wrote in allegorical terms

Some people take this too literally....I don't know if that is pick and choosing or not, but I look within to find a loving meaning on something that hasn't resonated with me yet. Sometimes, I'll ask on here what a quote might mean to get a broader perspective. Each to his own.

Matt 5:18 says that not any word, not even the smallest, will pass away from the law. What "we don't need to follow those" are we talking about?

The bible has seemingly endless applications... all of which can really only correctly be absorbed and understood through Christ himself, which dwells within some- and many as the Holy Spirit.

Don't you? Protestants chopped seven books out of the Bible but they keep bringing this up; I would think the only topic would be embarrassing for you. Now you're claiming the Israeli government is the New Jerusalem. You believe whatever you want to believe. Ultimately, only the Eastern Orthodox and Catholic Churches maintain a consistent and morally responsible framework for sincere religious values.

Do you ever catch yourself doing this same thing with non-religious subjects? Have you ever seen a history book that picks and chooses what things and times to include?

The old testement is the old covenant...the new testament is the new covenant. We are supposed to follow the whole bible, but it is not a MUST anymore now that Jesus has come. We don't have to circumsise our son's, we don't have to sacrifice a lamb....ect ect
