I'm not saying I'm an atheist, but when your so-called "God" turned his back on my mother and let her die at the young age of 52, I lost faith. Not that I had a whole lot since I wasn't raised in a religious family. She had complications from a liver transplant. She was the most caring, loving being on the face of this earth, and yet there's child molesters, rapists and murderers living well into their 80's. I don't get it.

Well, I wasnt raised atheist. My parents were both trained Baptist missionaries & I have an uncle & two cousins who are preachers. Thus, church was a big thing growing up. But then I joined the USMC & for 10 years traveled the world seeing man behaving at his worst. I have seen the death, the horrors, the destruction & most of it can not be justified. Suddenly, I found myself saying "God left here a long time ago". Some now say I strayed, but thats not true. I just stopped believing & if there was a God, he allowed all this to happen & could have stopped it. Therefore, he does not deserve my love or worship.

Being a big student of history, I still find religion fasinating though. Have read & studied all the religions. Which brings another question. Which one IS the right religion?? christian, jew, muslim, buddist?? And HOW do you PROVE it??

I was kind of hoping this would be a mean question. I had a mean answer all lined up. *sigh*

Oh, well.

Some people find it hard to believe in gods as they are portrayed. Gods do not make sense from a logical stand point. Also, many religions teach hate or violence so some atheists believe the world would be better without religion. Many atheists use science to decry religion, since science contradicts many religions at every turn. With all the scientific evidence out there, it can be hard not to be an atheist.

You could ask your sister too, for a more personal response on why she became an atheist. I'm agnostic myself, so your sister might give you a better answer.

I just figured that the God I was taught as a child just couldn't exist in the form it was taught. It was more a combination of the followers not having the character I thought they should and the fact that the teachings were either "No duh" or "What the heck does that mean?". I have not searched out any other forms of God yet, but I will eventually. Really though, the closest I ever will come to believing in God is through Deism, which is barely a religion at all.

Also, going to Church all the time really didn't run with me :]

Because they are just too hard hearted and hard headed to recognize that there is a greater power than that of human reasoning. They do not hold true to faith or allow God to work in their lives. They are people who think that seeing is believing but do not realize that believing without seeing is the key to everlasting happiness is the presence of God.They run around talking about all sorts of theories and how they are "properly educated" but in truth their hearts and minds are not open enough to God.They only focus on the bad instead of the brighter side of things. They can't understand that God brings hard times into our lives so that we may learn from them and help others who are going through similar troubles.

I think most atheists grow up that way. Others become enlightened after a few years of church yakking.

Why are you an atheist when it comes to Zeus, or Jupiter, or Ti, or Ganesh, or Allah? We're just like you, with one less god.
