The cable that goes to the derailer is broken and I was wondering if anyone has a ball park figure of how much it is to replace something like that. It looks simple enough but the last time I took a bike to the shop for something simple they wanted to charge me over $100 dollars, way more than the bike was even worth.

bikernoj I had a broken crank (I think that's what they call it) and I didn't want anything fancy because it was just a run of the mill bike I bought at Sears. I don't see why it would cost $100 bucks to fix something like that.

This is a simple job, if you have some mechanical ability. A shift cable can be purchased for about $5-7 at any bike shop. They come double ended, having a ball on one end and barrel on the other depending on which you need. Cut the other end off.
Remove the old cable. Lube up the new cable and slide it through the shifter and cable housing to the derailleur.
Shift to the smallest cog. Then pull the cable through tight around the anchor screw and tighten the screw. You may have to adjust the tension with barrel adjuster on derailleur where cable enters.
Good luck.
This is very simplified, but if you have some mechanical ability, you will be able to figure it out. Or better yet buy a repair manual so you don't have to take your bike to a repair shop for minor repairs.

Woah!!! Five bucks sounds about right! Don't pay a hundred. Sometimes bike repairs can be pricey, new parts can be like that, but cables are cheap and easy to install... even if the routing is tricky, it is not usually super expensive tricky...

Just the cable? About $5. Cable and installation? About $30.

If you don't know how to change a cable and adjust a derailleur, how do you know your previous query was as "simple" as you think? If you asked them to do something completely lame, they'll quote you an outrageous price so they don't have to screw up a bike by your request.

about 100 bucks sounds right, mine broke, they tuned up my bike, straighten the rims. Hate to pay that much=[ but the shifter is spring loaded (newer bike). I put new tires on the bike myself, thought tires would be $10 each, not try $25/ tire. Now I am into $ 160 for a 3 year old bike that a bought for $250. UGH!!!
