The crime committed in the city, you get your *** in the city holding cells, until the County Deputy comes and takes you to the County Jail. If you get arrested outside of the city limits, it will the the County Deputies or County Sheriff, that will take you right to the County Jail. You will stay at the County Jail, until you are handcuffed and taken before a County Judge. The only time spent in the Police holding cell, is a short time. In our City the Police who do the arresting , now takes the criminal directly to the County Jail.
You don't ever want to get thrown into a Mexican Jail.

At least in my town, the Police Dept was not certified to be a jail so we only had a holding cell. There were plenty of regulations to its use as far as how long a person could be held, buying them meals, etc.
The Sheriffs office and jail is only 2 blocks away, so it was unusual if we used our holding cell. Usually we booked them on our charges and took them to the county lockup and stayed with the prisoner until he was booked in there.
Then again, my town is only about 13 thousand people on the far SW suburbs of Chicago.

Generally speaking, you would go to the county jail. Most police depts don't want to hold you even if it is only for 32 hours.

city jail and the police holding tanks are different. When you are first arrested you go to the police holding tanks to be transported to the jail to await trial. the jail is where you are held til your trail or sentenceing or you can be sentenced and sent to jail if it is under a years sentence.
