Hmmm... sounds like somebody had a bad experience lately with the "turn your head and cough" routine...

As to the actual question, the number I have always heard bandied about is that the average human - and whether you wish to lump physicians into that is your perogative - doesn't use more than 10% of their brain's capacity in his or her lifetime, meaning that there is a great deal of untapped mental resource, if somebody can figure out how to use it.

Imaging techniques pretty much prove that this is just a myth. Just do a google image search for brain activity.
