Arrrgh, I sympathise with your situation! How awful to see someone doing this to their dogs - it's out of love, so it's so hard to convince them they're actually harming the animal!

You say your Dad is a big guy - I suppose then he's not really aware of how damaging overweight is. If he's not willing to help himself, it is going to be hard to get him to help his animals.

You could start by having a serious conversation with him, say you need to make him aware just how bad it is for animals to be overweight. It really does shorten their lifespan - they are prone to arthritis and heart problems due to the stress the extra weight is putting on their body. Complications of overweight also include, but are not limited to, increase in occurence of tumours, urinary problems, exercise intolerance and diabetes - all the same problems that overweight humans suffer from!

Explain to your Dad that he NEEDS to keep the dogs' weight down - but to do so is going to be very hard because they are now so used to getting human food, so he's going to have to be tough. Start by cutting down on the amount of table food he gives them, until he is only giving them ONE mouthful a day - and then none. These dogs NEED to learn to be happy with dogfood only - it's not fair on them that he has got them used to human food, now they've learned to expect it and it's going to be hard on them not to get it anymore, but it really is for their own good!

My nextdoor neighbour is very overweight - I'm afraid even having a stroke has not made him change his eating habits. His cat is also very fat, but fortunately for her he has allowed me to put the cat on a diet. He comes out with all the same rubbish overweight people always come out with 'yes I'm overweight but a lot of it's muscle to' - er, no it isn't!! It's all just fat! Fortunately the cat is losing weight thanks to the diet food I've put her on, I don't know what's going to become of her owner.

I went threw this with my Grandfather and their dalmation... It is very bad for the dog especially certain foods. Possibly have a vet talk to your father or tell him if he feeds the dog all this crap it'll be dieing a lot sooner than him and he wants the dog there with him.

Make sure he doesn't feed the dogs chocolate, pork in any form it causes liver and kidney failure because of its high fat content, milk, and grapes.

Another idea is maybe have him make healthy treats for the dogs or give them healthy snacks so he feels hes still spoiling the dogs only in much smaller amounts.

Tell your dad he is "killing with kindness".
Many people foods cause panceaitis in dogs, and an overweight dog has about a 30% LESS lifespan than a dog of a healthy weight. Being overweight makes them prone to many disease, particularly diabetes and is a strain on their heart & lungs and all their joints.
It would be much kinder to the dog (and good for dad), to take it for a long walk to show love, not sit around stuffing it with food.

A piece of what? Some things he eats wouldn't hurt the dogs - meat, vegetables, rice, so on. They should not get anything that is spicy, salty, has a lot of fat. No bacon, corn, grapes, chocolate - all things that are either poisonous or dogs just can't digest. My dogs have always gotten some of what I eat - a few bites as treats, and never anything that's just plain not good for dogs.

If your father won't listen to you, he's sure not going to listen to a bunch of people he doesn't even know! How about your vet - will he listen to the vet tell him he's killing his dogs with kindness?

you need to educate yourself before you can educate him. lots of vets seem to disagree but thats because they sell dog food but dog food isnt really a dogs best friend. you should research and try to teach your dad doggy recipes or the BARF diet in which the dogs recieve little or no dog food and thrive on human food such as raw meat and bones, vegetables and fruit. i have had less skin, and health problems from my shar pei since i started a home diet. cooked foods are okay but raw is better. fruits and veggies must be ripe, meat must be frozen for 48 hours and thawed to make sure there are no live parasites fish for 7 days. yogurt with live cultures, cottage cheese etc for snacks. honey is the only acceptable sugar food mine gets. remember raisins, chocolate and onions are no good for dogs and raw potatoes are bad also may cause allergic reations. theobromine in chocolate is fatal although white chocolate has none and is okay for the occasional snack. look it up and research the barf diet then talk to your dad if he is like a lot of people and feel thier dogs deserve good food like he gets then maybe you can at least get him to change the way he gives it. starches such as rice, wheat and bread are only 10% of diet.. tell him lots of bones but raw!!! cooked bones splinter and raw ones do not.

not only are the human foods not good for them, they could become over weight and start havin real health problems, then that could cut into his wallet. they do make foods like ice cream and cookies for dogs, during the summer i buy doggie ice cream for them, and at walmart i buy the choc. treats made for the dogs. i dont make it an everyday treat but once a week i do and the rest of the week they get reg dog treats that help with their teeth and digestion. i buy my raw hide treats at the vet, they carry the digestiable kind because alot of rawhides cant pass though and cause problems. and the person who left u the list of "bad foods" i was glad to read it ty.

with concerns with my own dog eating from the table, I went to go check it out on the net. I found that these types of food are fine for a dog to have, veggies. rice, pop corn, pasta, fruit, cottage cheese, low fat yogurt, hard boiled eggs, and cook meat. Things like onion, garlic, grapes, and raisins. I can't remember all the items but got it off the net by asking about dogs and human foods.

For the love of gawd! If the dog wants to eat the food given, then it will. If the dog doesn't like the food, it won't. So what (?) your father is giving poochie some human food, it hasn't killed us yet.

...and what's more, why are you not worried about your father's weight? Never mind the dogs'.

Trust me, you arent the only one who see's people harming dogs out of ignorance... I know a few people that do the same thing and it is sick. I got my sister to quit feeding her foods by telling her some of the things that will poison a dog. I read the list but didnt send it to her, so she wouldnt know for sure what she couldnt feed her dog, so she ended up feeding her dog only dogfood.
Other people just cant be helped. They want their dogs to be just like them, and dont realise dogs arent people.
You can also wait until this post is filled up, and show it to him!

My mother in law became so ingrained with feeding her dog ANYTHING she ate, including wrappers from a cupcake. The dog got so fat that he couldn't stand on his own legs, his last 4 years of life were spent lying down and had to be helped up in order for him to stand. She eventually put him to sleep about a month ago, this was of course after she replaced him with another dog.
